    Default The Affair on Showtime

I tried to search this a couple of different ways and didn't find it, so apologies if this is an extra thread, and mods feel free to delete or merge or whatever.

The Affair (TV Series 2014– ) - IMDb

For some reason, I always need something to hate-watch, because there's something really gratifying to me about nitpicking a show to pieces, or maybe I just secretly enjoy the show itself, but whatever it is, I watch The Affair pretty regularly. Fiona Apple does the theme song (I knew the voice and couldn't place it the first time I heard it), and it's pretty much the best thing about the show. I kept hearing pretty good things about it, so I though that maybe it would be a unique look on infidelity and how it impacts all parties involved instead of some run of the mill television dirge on cheating. But whatever. I was hoping that someone else here watches it and wants to nitpick with me. Or maybe some of you guys love it and I'm the odd one out...

We're on Season 3 now and they've introduced a French professor to the storyline who is so stereotyped I keep waiting for her to show up on a baguette-laden bicycle with a beret and striped shirt, and it's a shame because other than that, I actually find her the most interesting character on there so far.

I'm only still watching for Joshua Jackson. Noah is a total asshole and they have reduced Helen to following him around like a puppy 24/7 and I'm not sure why I'm supposed to be onboard with the fact that Allison is the hottest thing alive. Oh and Noah and Helen's kids are a bunch of assholes too just like dear old dad.

I agree with all of that. Joshua Jackson is hot AF in this and I like his current wife a hell of a lot better than Alison and it seems ridiculous he would leave Luisa for her. I thought Helen was a cool, strong woman and now she's a shrill, shrewish stereotypical ex-wife. This season I have especially hated that they are really super pushing Alison being the end all be all of every man's life (I do like the actress on Luther, but it took some doing on that show, too). Her mouth is distracting, too.

The kids are annoying as hell, especially the oldest one, but I love her clothes and style. That's about the only positive thing I can say about her.

ETA - Brendan Fraser is my new nightmare. WTF is up with him?

Yeah, Alison with her magic vagina.

I've watched this from the start but for some reason when I first started I thought it was gonna be a 10-episode story (kinda like True Detective) then it took a turn and was renewed. It's pretty much turned into a soap opera, with the death of Scotty and Noah taking the fall, the baby turning out to be Cole's, who then marries a woman who can't have kids...now Noah's stabbing and the weird, menacing Brendan Frasier character.

Re Cole and Alison, don't know what will happen there, but their characters have a lot of history (childhood sweethearts and lost a child together) and chemistry, and Cole is obviously still very hung up on her, so nothing would surprise me. They are portraying Luisa as this childless shrew who wants to steal someone else's baby blah blah and I don't see how she'll be able to compete against poor wounded bird Alison who once again shares a child with Cole.

And yeah, I don't know what the hell they've done to Helen's character, she was very cool at one point and now she's still pining for Asshole Noah, who could give two shits about her and obviously blames her for his stint in jail and ruining his superstar author life, and his relationship with Alison, who he still wants. Again, the magic vagina.

Yep even though Allison is the one that pushed the victim in front of the car. Funny how it is all Helen's fault.

Yeah that whole plot line sucks. I don't think Alison intentionally pushed him in front of a moving vehicle though, did she? I took it as she was just trying to get him away from her. Helen was driving drunk, Noah was drunk, Scotty was drunk. It's not even clear to me if Noah ever saw Alison. The way they show the same scenes from different characters' points of view makes it hard to figure out which story is correct. (Funny how Alison's always portray her as the victim who everyone wants to fuck, and in Noah's, he's the stud everyone wants to fuck.)

No she didn't. It was just a series of mishaps and a total accident well except for the part where Helen and Noah were drunk but even sober how would you miss a person suddenly falling into your pathway. Dumbass Noah made the decision to sacrifice himself and plus he sucks so he gets no sympathy from me.

    Haha magic vagina.

What do they call it now? Limited series? That's what I thought it was supposed to be, too. I think one of the two creators left the show after the second season because they thought it was getting too soap opera-y and strayed too far from the original vision of the show. I would be more interested in seeing likable people having affairs, or at least people more likable than the lot we have here. You know when bad things happen to nice people? And how they would deal with it, even if it brings out the worst in them eventually.

"weird, menacing Brendan Fraser" is a good way to put it. He's scaring the fuck out of me and yet I feel no sympathy for Noah, so I'm not sure what the point of that all is.

Luisa started out at as a no-nonsense chick who didn't seem too judgmental, at least where Cole and his family are concerned, but that's pretty much changed. I liked them together because they didn't have so much baggage. Alison's wounded bird thing...yes, that's totally it.

Also, I am having issues with this whole custody thing anyway. They keep saying Alison abandoned her baby, but she didn't. She was sick, she went into the hospital, and before leaving, left her child with the biological father. I also don't think it's legal to allow someone to sign some mysterious paperwork when they're clearly not of sound mind that just gives all their custody away forever and ever.

So we don't really know if Noah knows that Alison pushed Scotty? I always wondered about that. I figured he didn't see her, but I didn't know if there was some flashback conversation that I blinked through where that may have been discussed further. But who knows at this point?

ETA I am also wondering why and how Noah has a magic penis. The high-strung student in the recent episodes says that she can't stand Noah Solloway, but all she can think about is fucking him, and I'm like ewwww. What? (Especially after he annihilates her in front of a class.) Not even the memory of Jimmy McNulty could make me want to do that with Noah. I don't get the appeal with that character and he's a piece of shit to boot.

^ I think in Alison's POV he saw her standing there in the woods at the side of the road. She definitely saw him. I don't think they showed her there in his POV. But, he and Helen were both drunk on their asses so who knows. Alison obviously blamed him for taking the fall for Helen, she asked him to tell the truth so he could come home to her and the kid. Nothing seemed to indicate she thought he was also covering for her part in the accident.

Oh, that's right! You saying that jogged my memory. Interesting though. As a side note, my theory on why Noah did it wasn't to cover for either of them, it's because he's a narcissist and wanted to play the martyr card and pretend like he's a real man and to cover his shortcomings.

Side note, it was driving me crazy how I knew that actress, she played the oldest daughter of Peter Krause and Monica Potter on Parenthood.

Not sure why everyone wants Noah, that book must be lady porn like Fifty Shades or something, it had Frenchy masturbating and apparently every female within the campus radius wants to fuck him. Even with that scraggly beard and criminal record, the magic penis lives on.

Yeah, that book must really be something. I was already laughing when she was sitting on a campus bench reading the book covered in a brown paper bag, because in an age of being able to read books on tablets and phones, that's not going to be conspicuous at all. The masturbation scene was just ridiculous from the get go where she's perfectly framed in that window seat with the high ceilings and it was painfully obvious that's where they were going with it.

I watched the first 3 episodes and I couldn't go any further. After reading all the point of views here, no need to continue.

I too watch and only for Joshua Jackson, but I'll say this season has got me pretty interested. I actually watch the next day instead of waiting a few weeks in between episodes like I did last season.
All you can do at life is play along and hope that sometimes you get it right.
