Cate Blanchett will play American TV icon Lucille Ball in a movie to be produced by her children.

The film, which will reportedly centre on the life of the I Love Lucy star, will be written by Aaron Sorkin, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ball was one of television's most recognizable personalities throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

The film is reported to be produced by Ball's and former husband Desi Arnaz's children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.

It's not the first time Blanchett will play an American icon in a movie - she appeared as Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator and Bob Dylan in I'm Not There.

Sorkin wrote the scripts for The Social Network, Moneyball and the upcoming Steve Jobs movie, which will star Michael Fassbender.

I bet she can pull it off.

and did an amazing job because she's just that good. she's one of six actors who played dylan in 'i'm not there'. great movie. highly recommend it. not your typical oscar-bait hollywood biopic.

i had no interest in an i love lucy movie but that's changed now that i know blanchett will be in it and that aaron sorkin is writing the script. sorkin may be an ass but he's a fucking amazing screenwriter and writes the best dialogue out there.

As much as I love Cate, I'm not feeling this. Her brand charm is so very very different from Lucy's, I just don't feel it going down okay.

Honestly, I don't think that playing Dylan is much of a stretch. He shows so little emotional affect that all you have to do is wear the makeup and clothes, and you are about 85% of the way there.

I don't see Blanchett in this role at all, but she is smart and very talented and wouldn't have taken it on unless she could pull it off.

Not sure about Blanchett in the role, but I fucking love Lucy and can't wait to see this.

She did Kathrine Hepburn beautifully, the voice, mannerisms and personality in The Aviator...but hell the face just didn't match and it killed it. I think the same will be with Lucy. Cate will get it all right except the looks...there's no way they can make her face into a Lucy face.
