Default The Giver - Official Trailer released

What do you think? It's not at all what I was expecting, but I'm excited for the movie. This is one of my absolute favorite books.

I really hate the trailer. The Giver was one of my favorite books growing up, I read it so many times that my copy fell apart. This looks almost nothing like the book I loved as a child.

I'm also really upset that it wasn't filmed in black and white. Finding color was such a big thing in the book.

I never read it but my son is reading it now, tells me in detail what it is about, somethings made me think of scientology, makes it so weird for me that Holmes is in that movie.

I agree. I was shocked that they didn't film it in black and white. I'm also not crazy about all of the stunt casting (Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift). I am worried the movie is not going to do the book justice. It feels like they're trying too hard to make it another action-packed, cutting edge Hunger Games or Divergent, when it was just so much more character driven and intellectually stimulating than today's dystopian YA books; part of what made it so special was that it didn't need over the top violence and 'action' to tell a captivating story.

The sets, just from what I can see in the trailer, are way too elaborate for the community described in the books. The costuming is wrong. The kids seem a lot older. What's with the spaceship beaming Jonas up??? I don't remember anything like that in the book, but it's been a while since I read it. It just feels like they took a lot of liberties and tried to make everything flashy and over the top, when the simplicity of their community was a huge aspect of the story.
