Default Australian TV Networks Sport the "Evil" Gene

I need broadband. I need it so I can watch television. I'm a telly junkie!
Reasons I need it mostly are because of Australian television.

If you love Australia but love your television more, don't plan on moving here unless you have broadband! Our FTA telly is shockingly bad, pay tv costs too much... It's AWFUL!

The only US show we are relatively up to date with is The OC, but the ads the past few weeks leading up to the finale are completely awful. Here was their first tagline for the finale: "TV's most tragic ending..." which, a week later evolved into: "Marissa Cooper will DIE."
So they sort of ruined it.

I don't suppose anybody here has been to Australia and seen how cruddy our networks are? Every time I mention it somewhere, people have a hard time believing just how awful it really is!

Explain more please, I dont understand. So like what shows can you see? How many tv stations do you have? What about cable? I guess I figured if people live in a major city you have cable.

People in cities have cable but in more rural areas countryfolk (we have those too!) rely on satellite. We have 5 'free to air' stations - ABC and SBS which are publicly owned and reasonably commercial-free and 3 fully craptastic commercial channels, 7, 9 and 10. It's a tossup which is worse. Then we get the usual Foxtel stuff on cable/satellite.

My fave crapshow is Deal Or No Deal (the one with the 26 suitcases) on Channel 7. Magic.

Being the Buffy fan that I am I've always held the Australian networks in utter contempt. And they just seem to get worse and worse. If they aren't cutting a season of a show in half, they move it to a time slot so ridiculous untill it has no viewers and then axe it because of that reason (re: Farscape, 4400, battlestar gallactica, six feet under, nip/tuck, 24, weeds....). They have no interest in showing anything new and interesting, preferring to show the sitcoms from the states that got rejected and axed themselves because of how stupid and lame they are. They treat anything remotely scifi or fantasy like complete shit. They wont show anything that could be remotely controversial but will willingly show ANY REALITY TV SHOW that can possibly be reproduced for the Australian market, or just show the american versions about a season after they've aired so anyone who would watch it all ready knows what happened anyway.

The only networks that have any love for anything is the abc and sbs. At least sbs show something like Big Love without blinking an eye. I'm hoping they pick up Dexter because god knows that none of the commercial shows would show that. I'm waiting for ch10 to get rid of Torchwood as soon as the male bisexual storylines come into play.
