Default Veronica Mars Kickstarter Project Makes $2 Million In Less Than 10 Hours

The Veronica Mars Kickstarter Project Makes $2 Million In Less Than 10 Hours

Kickstarter isn't only a place for your cousin to ask for donations to produce an album for his band (and you know he spent that money on booze, weed, lube, porn and fried chicken sandwiches). Kickstarter is also a place for the creator and star of a canceled TV show to ask for money to make a movie. This morning, the creator of Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas, told the fans that Warner Bros., who owns the rights to the show, would only agree to make a movie if he could prove that people wanted one. So Rob Thomas started a Kickstarter to show that fans want the movie and will pull out their wallets to get the movie made. Rob set a goal of $2 million in 30 days. Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast got into it and they reached $1 million in just four hours. They broke through their $2 million goal in under 10 hours and people are still throwing money at their asses.
Rob and Kristen weren't just holding out their Styrofoam cups and yelling at people to throw money in there. They were also giving out prizes for donations. $10 gets you a copy of the script and they were selling a speaking role in the movie for $10,000. The speaking role was gone in just a few hours. Surprisingly, Lindsay Lohan didn't use a stolen credit card to buy it. That shit was a missed opportunity if you ask me. And no, people who donate aren't going to get a cut of the profits if the movie makes money.
Rob tells EW that the entire cast is jizzing shit over this and they will start production this summer. It will be out in early 2014. Warner Bros. is supposedly going to pay for promotion and distribution and other stuff. Rob also said this:
“My mind is blown. I’ve been fantasizing about this taking big and had to tell myself, ‘Stop it, Rob, you’re being silly. You’re setting yourself up for disappointment. And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up.We better deliver. I knew Veronica Mars fans were cool, but I had no idea they could rally with such power. They are unstoppable — just like Veronica. I will have a permanent blush on my face, feeling so lucky to be associated with this entire thing."
I didn't donate, because I didn't really watch the show and because I'm saving my money for the Send the Kardashians to Mars Kickstarter campaign and the Bring Back The Charmings Kickstarter campaign.
Even though raising $2 million in just 10 hours is some crazy shit, they could've raised $2 million in 10 seconds easily. All they had to do was offer a love scene with a sloth in the movie for a $2 million donation. Kristen Bell's sloth loving ass would've immediately transferred $2 million out of her checking account and into that Kickstarter account. Just like that. Boom. Done. The end!

I cannot wait for this to start filming. It's probably my favorite tv show of all time, I still force people to watch it-I made the boyfriend watch the first week we were dating.

I'm in for $50, so I'll get a physical copy of the movie shortly after it hits theaters (but you know I'll be in the theater opening weekend!)

That would be cool to have the physical copy of a movie shortly after it hits theaters. It's nice of them to give a perk out like that for supporting the project. I will be interested in what they do with the story.

There are definitely some cool perks.

The $50 level gets a DVD, if you give $100 you get a Bluray that has promised even more behind the scenes stuff than the DVD will have, and both are supposed to ship a month after it gets released to theaters. I'll also get a digital download of the movie, a PDF of the shooting script the day the movie comes out, and an "exclusive" tshirt. Some of the higher donations get a recorded outgoing voicemail message by a cast member of your choice, signed stuff, and then things like tickets to the premiere, opportunities to be an extra, personal early screenings, naming a character, and of course, the speaking role. The guy who bought that one for $10,000 has already been interviewed and he isn't even really a fan of the show and isn't sure if his schedule will allow him to do it (he said he might have to pass it on to a friend), he just really believes in grassroots fundraising and funds a lot of Kickstarters. His name is Steven Dengler and he founded XE.com

This has made me want to go rent the entire series. I always thought I'd like it because I vaguely remember Joss Whedon being involved, and Joss's stamp of approval is like rolled gold in my books.

Joss had a cameo in one of the episodes because he was such a big fan. At one point he posted on his blog that it was one of the best shows currently on TV and that more people should be watching it.

I know that in the US, thewb.com made all 3 seasons available for streaming today, but I doubt it will work elsewhere in the world. It's definitely worth your time though, especially the first season. There have been a few friends that I forced to watch over the years that by the time we hit the midpoint of the 1st season they were wanting to pull an allnighter just to finish it.

OMG, yay! That's awesome news! I loved that show! Though the rape that was and then wasn't and then was again... that was kinda dumb. Oh and Logan was an annoying bitch who didn't deserve Veronica. Still, the first season of that show was pure perfection.

‘Veronica Mars’ Movie Trailer: Are You Team Logan or Team Piz?

Much like its TV show counterpart, it appears the “Veronica Mars” movie will be full of quick-witted pop culture-ready soundbites, a savvy sleuth out to right a wrong, and, well, said sleuth’s paramour problem.

The trailer for the eagerly awaited, Kickstarter-backed movie intersperses new scenes with shots from the UPN-to-CW TV series to emphasize that the more things change, the more they stay the same: Kristen Bell’s Veronica may now be living the grown-up life with Chris Lowell’s Stosh “Piz” Piznarski, her good-natured boyfriend from the show’s final season, but it doesn’t take much more than a phone call from trouble-pron bad boy ex Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) to draw her back to her Neptune, California roots. Cast and crew interviews also devote time to this love triangle, including writer-director Rob Thomas’ admittance that he would like his daughter to end up with a Piz — even though he knows Logan’s qualities might be more interesting for fiction.

With no release date in sight, “Veronica Mars” fans will just have to wait to see who wins.

^Piz is a nice guy and all, but Veronica deserves something more. I didn't like Logan at first but he grew on me.
I'm glad to see Principal Clemmons and Vinnie Van Lowe!

'Veronica Mars' movie gets a release date; plus, watch a clip! -- EXCLUSIVE - EW

On March 13, 2013, Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas asked fans of the acclaimed, gone-too-soon teen detective drama starring Kristen Bell to Kickstart a big screen revival. Fitting, then, that Marshmallow Nation will get to see what their $5.7 million paid for on the one year anniversary of the groundbreaking fundraising campaign: In an exclusive interview, Thomas tells EW that Warner Bros. will release the movie — simply titled Veronica Mars — on March 14, 2014. “Warner Bros. had this date circled for quite some time and hoped it would stay open,” Thomas tells EW. “Luckily, no other teen detective movie decided to open in the middle of March.”

The original distribution plan called for Veronica Mars to get a limited engagement run in just a few cities before becoming more widely available via video on demand and other digital platforms. But Thomas reports that Warner Bros. will now give the film a wider, nationwide release (number of screens still TBD) and let the marketplace decide how long it should stay in theaters. “We’re not going to dribble it out there,” says Thomas, who shot the movie in 23 days this past summer. He is currently finishing the special effects and putting together a soundtrack. Thomas also reports that a recent test audience screening went very well. “There are smart ways to do a movie of this size — and we chose none of them,” he says with a laugh. “We are a low budget movie with big set pieces and 60 speaking roles. A murder mystery in a house would have been more cost effective. But I think we have managed to pull it off.”

In the movie, Veronica returns to her hometown of Neptune, California, after 10 years away to aid former flame Logan (Jason Dohring), who has been accused of killing his pop star girlfriend. The original cast is back, including Enrico Colantoni as Veronica’s father and Tina Majorino and Percy Daggs III as Veronica’s best friends Mac and Wallace. Fans will see many other of their favorite characters, too, because after all: “10 years away” = 10 year high school reunion. See a sneak peek of the big event — movie and reunion — below:

We're In The Veronica Mars Movie!

    Ira writes:
Our staff gets its big-screen major-studio debut today when the Veronica Mars movie opens. There's an early scene in what are supposed to be the offices of This American Life and the filmmakers were kind enough to let our actual staff play themselves, as extras wandering around the scene. I have a couple lines.

More: We're In The Veronica Mars Movie! - This American Life

I didn't know about this and I was really surprised when I saw Ira in the movie.
