Default Another Unnecessary Remake: Lifetime's Steel Magnolias Trailer Debuts

    Lifetime's Steel Magnolias Trailer Debuts

The 1989 movie that helped make Julia Roberts a star is getting a makeover.

A new version of playwright Robert Harling's stage-to-screen dramedy Steel Magnolias is geared up as a Lifetime TV movie to air in the fall but the cable network is already previewing the tear-jerker on its website. Watch the trailer below (and have Kleenex ready!).

This time, the women at the core of the Southern story, set in the fictional Louisiana town of Chinquapin, will be played by African Americans: Queen Latifah as M'Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Condola Rashad, the Tony-nominated, real-life daughter of Phylicia, as Shelby.

In the movie (based on the 1987 play), those roles were played, respectively, by Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah and Roberts.

"It's a classic story with classic characters," Woodard told the New York Post this week. "It's not like we're turning it into Big Momma's House!."

Of playing Ouiser, the steeliest of the magnolias, the four-time Emmy winner, 59, said, "I really enjoy being bitchy! It's fun. You have to behave all your life. But it is always fun to get to act like a person who is not accommodating at all."

I couldn't stand this fucking movie with white characters in it. Why not hire black writers to write a realistic show about black women from the South instead of retreading something that was for shit to begin with???

So why didn't they just cast Phylicia Rashad as M'Lynn since her real-life daughter is playing Shelby?

I didn't like Phylicia Rshad on The Cosby show, I sure as hell ain't watchin her in this!

Aww, I loved Phylicia Rashad on The Cosby Show!

The part I can't get in this movie is Queen Latifah as M'Lynn. That's just bizarre. I don't mind the original, but Shelby (Julia Roberts) was one of the most annoying characters ever created....Or maybe I'm just thinking of Julia Roberts in general.....

Yes, she was annoying in this. Her acting was great, but her character was so "precious" and seemingly stupid. I sympathize with her illness but she was actually very selfish to get pregnant. She knew the risks and did it anyway...leaving that boy without a mother. But, that was the story so...

And I would've cast Queen Latifah as Ouiser!

^Yeah, the pregnancy was such a pivotal part of the story, and part of what I really disliked about the story and the character of Shelby. I sympathized with her illness as well, and I guess the writer was going for "tragic free spirit", but to me it was just really pretty selfish.

Oddly enough, this is one of the few movies I ever liked Julia Roberts in. But I agree about the character being selfish. But it was spot on for a spoiled southern white girl who everyone adores (along with her mother) because she's sickly. Olympia, Shirley and Dolly were my favorites in the original.

I will not watch this. Lifetime is scraping bottom now. First hiring Lohan to play Liz Tayler and now this.

I guess it's better than their usual woman-as-victim TV movies.
