Tom Cruise inspires a Law and Order SVU episode
In a case of art imitating life, this week’s episode (and the seventh season’s finale) of the drama
Law and Order: SVU focused on a celebrity insisting that psych meds are unnecessary — and the tragedy that ensues because of it.
The episode features a girl (played by
Brittany Snow) mowing down a group of pedestrians in her car during a failed suicide attempt, triggered by her
bi-polar disorder. We find out that she recently decided to go off her meds, because she saw an interview with a famous rock star who vehemently stated that drugs and psychiatry were bad, bad, bad. A news clip of the “musician” is shown in which he says, “You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do. I’ve studied it.” Hmmm, sound familiar?
Tom Cruise spoke those same words to Matt Lauer — right before he accused Lauer of being glib.
The episode then deviates from real life, showing the “rock star” taking over the girl’s trial and brainwashing her into turning away from all who love and care about her.
The show was an obvious dig at the irresponsible messages celebs can send when they take their acting personas a little too seriously, and the dangers society can face when taking such messages too much to heart — especially when those members of society are young and impressionable.
Getting such influence to end, however, may just be a mission: impossible.
