Lea Michele & Chris Colfer Not Returning for 'Glee' Season 4

Get ready to say goodbye to Rachel, Kurt, and Finn.
Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith will not be returning for the fourth season of Glee, according to the show’s creator Ryan Murphy.
“[They are] not going to be back at all for Season 4,” Ryan told THR. “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”
While Ryan has previously mentioned that cast members would be graduating at the end of next season, these are the first cast members officially not returning.
While Chord Overstreet was not made a series regular for the third season, he is still welcome on the show and could possibly be bumped to a regular for season four.

I liked the show but the novelty wore off. With these three leaving I think the end of the show is near.

Does that mean Lea Michele will disappear now?

Nah, they are going to be in a spin off, just like was foreshadowed in the season finale.

eta, forgot to mention what a dick Ryan Murphy is. Talking to Lea and Chris about their future on the show and letting Cory find out through the media is a dick move.

Well it's about time somebody graduated on that show. Seriously, they're suppose to be in high school for a seven year run.

“I think it was something we all knew was coming, just because Ryan has said from the beginning that people would be graduating,” he says. “It’s definitely not my choice, but I absolutely respect it and understand why it has to happen. - Chris Colfer
Ryan Murphy is officially a massive idiot. There better be a spin-off, because this makes no sense. I also just read on TwoP that Chris said on Good Day LA that he found out from angry fans on Twitter.

The show hasn't been officially renewed, I wonder what FOX thinks about Glee continuing without three of it's biggest stars.

^ Cory said he didn't know about this either, until he found out on Hollywood Reporter.

Ryan Murphy is a big pile of douche for doing that. How unprofessional.

This makes no sense. Why are these characters suddenly a grade older than everyone else?? I was under the distinct impression that they were all in the same grade and that Kurt and possibly Quinn were actually a grade below the others. No way in hell is Kurt older than Puck and Santana. Now these three were supposedly always a year older than everyone else?? Um, no.

I think that these three may have done something that put a dent in Ryan Murphy's massive ego and he decided on a whim to write their characters out, then bragged about his 'creative genius' in doing so to the media instead of doing them the courtesy of discussing it like a professional.

AGreed Southern Belle - i only watch the show occasionally and while i don't believe it should run forever. I too find it strange that these three are going but not the others.

I am sure i read somewhere that all the cast would go by Season 4.

    IDK - we'll see.

I could see Puck and Santana getting held back a year. They don't seem like the most studious kids of the Glee Club.

'Glee': Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith NOT leaving show after third season

The biggest Glee news coming out of Comic-Con: Despite Ryan Murphy saying that Rachel, Kurt, and Finn will graduate at end of this coming third season, stars Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith will return for season 4.
At today’s panel in San Diego, Glee co-creator and exec producer Brad Falchuk told the audience that even though the three were set to finish high school, “because they’re graduating doesn’t mean they’re leaving the show. If you have Lea Michele under contract, you don’t say, ‘We’re gonna let you go.’”
“It was never our plan or our intention to let them go,” Fulchuk added. “They are not done with the show after this season.”

That’s a big about-face from what Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter: “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”
Murphy also said he made the decision in concert with Michele and Colfer. “I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea,” he told THR. “They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top.”
EW confirmed that all of the actors have signed traditional seven-year contracts so it’s not like their deals were going to expire after next season, though the studio retains the right to drop them year after year.
Chord Overstreet’s exit, however, is still a go, Falchuk said. In fact, he won’t return this fall for any episodes. Falchuk said Overstreet was offered a deal to return for 10 episodes with the possibility of becoming a series regular, but Overstreet declined in favor of other opportunities.
