Tom Cruise is bringing the ’80s back, with or without a Top Gun sequel. The actor is closing a deal to star as womanizing rocker Stacee Jaxx in Adam Shankman’s big-screen adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Rock of Ages, his rep confirms. In the stage show, the character sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and is a part of other numbers including “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” He also receives a lap danc, and takes more than one punch. News of Cruise being courted for the film was first reported in October.

Why not just include "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", and call it Top Gun 2?

Barf. If Cruise is in it, it should be renamed "Rock of Aged".

*crosses this off the list of things that I might ever possibly watch*

I don't care how many of the songs featured in this will be ones that I have grown up loving, if it has got The Cruiser in it then there is no way that I'll ever watch it.

I have seen the musical and there is no way in HELL! Tommy boy can pull this off. He isn't sexy, he can't sing, and he is way too old. He is so going to ruin this for me Stacy Jaxx is supposed to be really hot and everyone wants him plus he can sing really well. How can Tom Cruise pull off being a heavy metal rocker?

I'd watch it just for shits and giggles. Hell it'll probably be on DVD a month after theater release because of beyond lame ticket sales.

Julianne Hough Joins Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages

Julianne Hough's Burlesque days are over -- she's ready to rock!

The 22-year-old triple threat is set to star opposite Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages; Hough confirmed the news on her Twitter account Thursday night.

"Thanks to everyone for all your good vibes and good luck wishes," she wrote. "It worked! I got Rock of Ages!"

Hough -- who's currently dating media mogul Ryan Seacrest -- will play Sherri, the small-town girl who captures the attention of heavy metal rocker Stacee Jaxx (Cruise, 48).

"Seriously you guys, I'm dying right now," Hough tweeted. "I'm so excited and can't wait for this journey of becoming Sherri! It all starts NOW!"

Adam Shankman (Hairspray, She's All That) will direct New Line's film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical; production begins this May.

Shouldn't they have cast Charlie Sheen, cuz he IS a rockstar!

This just seems like a train wreck waiting to happen. This is the worst casting choice since he was cast as the Vampire Lestate. HE WILL MAKE A FOOL OUT OF HIMSELF!!! Is he really that out of touch that he would think this would be a good idea for him?

I was watching "Interview with the Vampire" night before last and snickering at Cruise and that dolt Pitt. Sadly, it's probably the best either of them has ever been, but still just wrong. I was thinking about who I saw as Lestat and Louis, but couldn't come up with anyone. I just know Tom and Brad were shitass choices.

He's probably producing this himself so that he got the role.

From what I have read - River Phoenix was supposed to play Pitt's part. Lestate needs to be more effiminate. I always thought Julian Sands would have been a great choice.
