James Franco in Talks to Replace Johnny Depp in "Wizard of Oz" Prequel

    Posted: February 5th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

At one point director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) had to choose between "World of Warcraft" and a "Wizard of Oz" prequel as his next project. He went with the "Oz" prequel, called "Oz: The Great and Powerful," which already had Robert Downey Jr on board to play the wizard.

But Downey recently dropped out, leaving Disney without a lead actor. The studio then entered discussions with Johnny Depp, but the deal fell through on Thursday. So now, Disney is hoping that James Franco (127 Hours) can step in.

If cast, Franco will re-team with his "Spider-Man" director and will play Oz, a young illusionist with a grandiose attitude who is forced to flee a traveling circus. His hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado to the land of Oz, which is run by two magical wicked witches.

At this point, "Oz: The Great and Powerful," has yet to set a start or release date, but Disney is hoping to begin production in the second half of the this year.

What's this Franco epidemic? Wherever I turn his name is there. I liked him in Spiderman but is he that good?

I'd like to see Downey Jr in the role but not Depp or Franco.

I am a huge fan of James Franco but I don't see him as the Wizard

Downey Jr should play the Wizard

An Oz-some idea! Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis compete to bewitch James Franco's wizard in new fantasy film

It is one of the greatest films ever made during Hollywood's golden period.
And now fans of The Wizard of Oz will learn just how the 1939 movie's titular character ended up ruling the magical land.
James Franco is playing the much beloved silver screen icon in Oz The Great And Powerful, after the part had been linked to Robert Downey Jr and Johnny Depp.

Witchy woman: Michelle Williams is quite literally the Good Witch as she is playing Glinda in Oz The Great and Powerful

A newly released trailer for the 2013 release starts off following the adventures of Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with questionable ethics, with the earthly scenes all being shot in black and white in homage to the original.

He is transported over the rainbow to the Land of Oz after his hot air balloon is caught in a whirlwind in Kansas, an event that will be familiar to anyone who watched the 1939 original.
The naive prestidigitator thinks he has hit the jackpot, and that fame and fortune are his for the taking.

But in a move that will make even Paul Daniels jealous, the conjurer has to work out which of a tantalising trio of witches he can trust in the strange and magical locale.

Colouring his opinion: Things would be easier for Oscar if he was shrewd enough to note the hair colour of Wicked Witches Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz

Somewhere over the rainbow: James Franco's character can scarcely believe his eyes when he realises he is in a faraway land

Piff paff poof: Even the Great Soprendo would be envious of Michelle's character's grand entrance

Bent out of shape: It appears something wicked is lurking that the wizard will have to tackle

The enchanting beauties are played by Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz.
Matters are made slightly easier for viewers, as the raven haired beauties play the Wicked Witches of the East and West, while blonde Michelle plays Glinda The Good Witch.
It emerges the trio are not convinced he is the prophesied great wizard the people have been waiting for.
Oscar ends up being drawn into the epic problems facing the Oz, with his biggest priority discovering who good and evil before it is too late.

Can't happen here: Oscar spies something worrying in the distance as he enjoys a ride in his hot air balloon

Not so down to earth: As he is sucked into the tornado he loses his trusty magician's top hat

Stargazer: The prodigious prestidigitator gazes into the sky as he is sucked into the eye of the storm

And he proves to be more than the witches bargained for, as he is able to put his earthly conjuring arts to use through illusion, ingenuity, and even a bit of wizardry.
Paving the way for the Oscar-winning original's story, he manages to transform himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
Disney have signed up Spider-Man director Sam Raimi to helm the film, after also considering the likes of American Beauty favourite Sam Mendes and musical specialist Adam Shankman.
While the movie is a prequel, it is also being adapted from the book that spawned the original, L Frank Baum's iconic 1900 book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

And off he goes: He seems doomed but fans of the original know the crisis is only the beginning of his adventure

Since you've been gone: It remains to be seen what his circus friends get up to during his far flung adventure

I surrender: Oscar finally realises he has to trust Glinda and help the good people of Oz defeat the Wicked Witches

I'm interested to see this. I really like Franco, he's a solid actor but has been looking terrible lately, hopefully he's cleaned himself up.

I agree, I think it looks interesting. I might brave ticket prices and see it in the theater.

I like James Franco and I adore Michelle Williams, but I'm not sure I want to see this.

I know it's year old news but I'm a little miffed reading that Raimi chose to do this over his WoW movie. wth.

Franco can act. I thought he was great in 127 Hours, Milk, Howl and Pineapple Express. Hopefully, he will make a great wizard. I LOVE Rachel Weisz and can't wait to see her in this. The only one I have doubts about is Mila Kunis.

^ I like Mila but I feel the same about her as I do about Emma Stone - they're overexposed at the moment and normally act pretty similar (nothing wrong with that, not their fault how they're cast). I like them but a break or seeing something different would be nice.

eta: Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams look really good in their roles! Weisz looks perfect!
