Default 25 years ago on this day, Rock Hudson died

Rock Hudson died October 2, 1985 just a few months short of this 60th
birthday, of complications of AIDS. He was the first celebrity to give the
illness a face. Born Roy Harald Scherer jr. on November 17th, 1925, he
later took on the name of his stepfather, Fitzgerald, and with that name
he was discovered by Hollywood. The handsome, 6'6" Roy had his teeth
capped and was given the all American name "Rock Hudson", which studio
    bosses decided suited him better.
The fact that he was gay was hidden from the public by pairing him off
to starletts and co-stars for red carpet events. Insiders, though, were
well aware of Hudson's sexual preferences as he wasn't exactly trying
to hide his social life. When a tabloid threatened to out him in public,
a marriage was arranged between Hudson and his agent's secretary, but
the marriage only lasted 3 years, after which Hudson remained single, if
    only in public.
Having been a chain smoker since his teens (3 packs a day habit) and
also a moderate to heavy drinker, Hudson needed quintuple bypass
surgery in 1981, at the age of 55. During surgery, he received 4 units
of blood by transfusion. He wasn't a good patient, because quite soon
after his surgery, he picked up smoking again.
The first signs that something was wrong with Rock became noticable
by the end of 1983, when he started losing weight. He was diagnosed
with AIDS in June of 1984, but his state of denial was such, that his
publicists - when asked - claimed Hudson was suffering from cancer.
While working on Dynasty, late 1984, his condition deteriorated so
quickly that at some point, he could no longer remember his lines and
    had difficulty speaking.
Right after taping a segment for a new animal show with his good
friend and former co-star Doris Day and doing a promo for it, it was
obvious to the world that something was terribly wrong with Hudson.
He immediately left for France, where a trial of experimental drugs
to treat AIDS was set up. By that time, Hudson's condition was
already too bad to receive the treatment and he soon returned to
the US, barely conscious, where he died October 2, 1985, three
months after his last public appearance with Day.

I still miss Rock. I adored him all my life and always will. He was so funny in his Doris Day flicks and seemed to be a terrific guy all-around. He is very much missed.

My fave Rock Hudson story is when he met President Kennedy, and Kennedy mentioned that he was a Fitzgerald, like Rock was. "They say all Kennedys and Fitzgeralds are related." Without missing a beat, Rock said, "Great. I guess that will make Ella happy!". He was a witty man, and a good actor.

Right after he was diagnosed, the military went into full-panic mode and ordered HIV testing for all active duty personnel. We had about five guys on my aircraft carrier test positive. Strange days. One guy went AWOL because he was so terrified about his homosexuality being discovered.

Most of the gay men I knew/hung out with at that time(about 25 years ago) are now dead.

Such a terrible loss. Looking back it really was a 'Great Dying' that took place from about 85 to 95..before the retrovirals came out. It is a permanent haunting for me.

I hear you, Sojiita...I lost several friends and acquaintances during that time. It's very, very sad to think about.

Rock Hudson was a hunk! Damn' And, his speaking voice was wonderful. He was the whole package.

That just cracked me up! So funny.

Right after taping a segment for a new animal show with his good
friend and former co-star Doris Day and doing a promo for it, it was
obvious to the world that something was terribly wrong with Hudson.
I remember seeing that as a kid. In retrospect, I think it beautiful that Dorris Day was so very tolerant minded to Rock Hudson like that during his (obvious) time of need.

He fell ill back in the era where there were folks scared to so much as shake the hand of someone with AIDS. It was a frightening time back then because of a lack of knowledge about the disease. Homophobia played a huge role in all of that as well, IMHO.

He sure had a great deep speaking voice. One of my fave movies
with Rock was Giant. In it he (1925) and Elizabeth Taylor (1932)
played parents/older generation to Dennis Hopper (1936), Carroll
Baker (1931), Earl Holiman (1924) and Sal Mineo (1939).

    Some of my favorite scenes:

My first serious boyfriend was a dead ringer for a young Rock and lucky for me he was magnificently heterosexual [eyes glaze over]

I remember Rock's death too and the shock of his appearance when he appeared in Dynasty. He was clearly very ill but AIDS was the last thing anyone imagined because nobody outside Hollywood knew he was gay. His death really helped raise public awareness of AIDS although he paid a terrible price for it.

Default You Tube And Rock Hudson

There is a vid on you tube about the late Rock Hudson and it uses clips of his films to show how to wear a wife beater.

I think this is cool and it is also great eye candy, if you know what I'm sayn'

Here is the trailer for this really funny film he did with my most favorite actress Miss Paula Prentiss. The film is called "Man's Favorite Sport" and there is actually some tolerant minded gay subtext in this film and it is also truly funny.

I never really thought Rock Hudson was all that, looks wise, until I got older. Now I can see, he was very hot. Kinda of the George Clooney of his generation. (if you know what I mean)
