Default What if the classic Hollywood stars could always have stayed in their prime.....

My personal favorite, Warren Beatty, let some (what later turned out to be
classic) movies pass him by (Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, The Way
We Were, The Sting, The Great Gatsby - all of which roles went to Robert
Redford - The Godfather and Wall Street, to name just a few) in his best
years. Now the great ones of the past are either dead (think Clark Gable,
Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Jean Tierney, Burt
Lancaster, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, Douglas
Fairbanks (sr. and jr.), Vivien Leigh, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford, Henry
Fonda, Myrna Loy, Marlon Brando, Loretta Young, Robert Mitchum and so
many others) or (way) past their prime (Redford, Beatty, MacLaine, Olivia
de Havilland, Joan Fontain, Kirk Douglas, Ernest Borgnine, Elizabeth Taylor,
    etc.etc.etc.).

What if it were possible to bring those who passed away already back
and turn back the hands of time for them and the others who are old
now, so that they all would be in their prime. What parts would you
have liked to see them in, of existing movies that now have been made
starring others? And how do you think they'd have done it as compared
to the newer/younger stars who ended up playing those parts?
Warren Beatty: actor, director, writer, producer.

If the classic Hollywood icons were alive and in their prime now, their talent would be wasted on most of the crappy scripts modern Hollywood is churning out.

I'm not talking about Hollywood's rehashed TV shows into box office fair type
of movies. I'm talking about movies roughly from the mid 1970's until now.
The ones that are above flavor of the month, bubblegum level. The ones
that starred the current/recent big stars and were/are considered big movies.....

The mid-70's? The thread question says if they were in their prime now. So, that wouldn't include the mid-70's, because that's over 30 years ago. But I guess I'm reading it too literally.

John Garfield should have been cast in Golden Boy instead of William Holden. Holden was white bread milquetoast while Garfield had a fire in his belly. He was born for that role. (I know this isn't what you meant but it still pisses me off and I had to mention it)

I love Russell Crowe, but Garfield would have been just as excellent in Cinderella Man. In fact, Crowe and Garfield have similar screen persona's and a similar sensitive, workmanlike approach to acting.

Apart from that, I can't get too worked up. I've no need to live in the past.

I think that, had they still been around and in their prime, Bette Davis,
Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck could've done great in "The Devil
wears Prada", in the Meryl Streep part. Crawford would probably have
taken a more serious approach to it and Davis and Stanwyck would
have been great, sarcastic bitches in the part.

    exactly.
every generation has their actors and movies and every era produces wonderful movies. i don't necessarily think it's true that movies today are worse than the ones before - yes, the big blockbusters are pieces of shit and the sheer volume of movies produced has grown, but there are still wonderful movies being made.
there are great actors working today as well. they haven't been glorified and turned into icons the was the old ones were because that's what the passage of time does but it doesn't mean there aren't actors who are just as talented working today.

^This. Also, if the old rules applied, Hollywood would be even white and generally homogeneous than it is now.

Judy Holiday or Claudette Colbert would have been hilarious as the lead in Legally Blonde.

yes but what's the point of this?
people get old and die and new actors come along. why would you want every movie ever made to star only actors from a certain era.

Plus, the stars of yesteryear are hailed as legends partly because we never knew them, only the facade. They had people to cover up their shennanigans that would have dulled their shine and mystique, and so we remember them as untouchable and infallible. Actors today are the same as actors yesterday, except with their faults and misdeeds all out in the open.
