    Default Pernell Roberts dies

    January 25, 2010 | 1:24 pm

Pernell Roberts, an original cast member of one of television's classic westerns, "Bonanza," died at his Malibu home Sunday. He was 81.
His death from cancer was confirmed by his wife, Eleanor Criswell.
Roberts was known to fans as the handsome and smart eldest son of the Cartwright clan, Adam. He played the role from its inception in 1959, but tired of the role after six years and left the show to act in films and resume a stage career that had brought him a 1955 Drama Desk Award for best actor in a production of "Macbeth." In 1979, he returned to series television in the popular "Trapper John, M.D.," playing the title character, Dr. John McIntyre, for the show's entire seven seasons.
In later years, he had guest roles in other shows and narrated documentaries. He retired in the late 1990s.

I remember him best from Trapper John. And it always weirded me out that a bald, bearded dude was playing the role that Wayne Rogers originated, but hey, it worked.

    RIP

Aw, rest in peace, Pernell. I enjoyed him as an actor. Adam was my favourite.

Somewhere, on the big Ponderosa in the sky, they're all riding together into the sunset, still calling Lorne Green "Pa".

Part of the Michael Landon roast with 'Pa" Lorne Greene:

Love it when he says "A 47-year old father, with three 40-year old sons...."

I read somewhere today that Roberts said at one point regarding how limited the range of Adam Cartwright was (and I paraphrase badly here) in effect that "what 30-year-old still lives with his dad and still asks permission of his pa to do everything?" Only on the Ponderosa son. Only on the Ponderosa.

Pernell was my first crush as Adam. I cried when he left Bonaza. I now realize it was rather odd for an 8 year old to have a crush on a 37 year old. But he was so dark and handsome with a great sexy voice. RIP, my first love.

^ I had a crush on him too. He was my favorite Cartwright.

We went through a Bonanza re-run stage in college, and used to joke about how you couldn't fall in love with one of the Cartwrights or you'd end up dead. All their love interests bought the farm on Bonanza.

Hello mother fucker! when you ask a question read also the answer instead of asking another question on an answer who already contain the answer of your next question!

Lol. We had the same joke in my family. We all used to stay up to enjoy the midnight reruns together, so my fondness for the show goes beyond the show itself.
