As a former gymnast, the roll-out salto makes me nervous just to watch. One gymnast I always enjoyed was Dominique Moceanu, especially on floor. She had a charisma that a lot of gymnasts lack.

ABC Family has a TV show called "Make It or Break It" about a (fictional) group of elite gymnasts from a club in Denver who are Olympic hopefuls. The first couple of seasons were set at their home gym. This season, they are at the Olympic Training Center competing for spots on the team. There are definitely parts of it that are unrealistic, but it's a guilty pleasure and it does a decent job of portraying a lot of the challenges and other aspects of the life of a high level gymnast. All of the episodes dating back to Season 1 are available on the ABC family website if anyone's interested.

Here is an interesting 2008 interview with Dominique Moceanu that I thought some of you might enjoy. It's too long to post the whole thing here, so I'll just give a link.

Dominique Moceanu Interview: "I think Martha Karolyi should step down."

Thanks for the article. I've always thought Marta Karolyi was, err... scary to say the least. I'm not a fan of the survival of the fittest thing that the death camps seem to turn into. It's like it's not about talent or peaking, more about who will endure the selection process with the most limbs intact.

I havent been into gymnastics since the days of the Magnificent Seven.

They recently got back together when Dominique Moceanu was pregnant.

But that was over four years ago.

^ I thought you were a college student. You would have been like 1 or 2 during that Olympics.

They always bored me to tears. I only liked Amy Chow's style. She had the most difficulty, and was very graceful. The rest were mostly stumpy little midgets.

This is America's first World Champion (of either gender) Marcia Frederick, who was UB World Champion. Unfortunately she was unable to compete at the 1980 Olympics when the US boycotted.

That was a beautiful bars routine. So graceful and unique. I loved the front pike dismount.

I'm really rooting for Alicia Sacramone. I love to see an older (all of 24) girl. I was so rooting for Mohini Bhardwaj back in 2004.

I agree. I think the team needs at least one "veteran". Gymnastics is also a very mental sport. If you psych yourself out, you will fail, and I think the experience the previous Olympians have under that kind of pressure is very valuable. Unfortunately, I don't think Nastia or Shawn are physically capable of doing it again. They're not progressing like they should. But A-Sac still has a shot.

I'd love to see Shawn go again, but it might not be in the cards. I was so surprised she stopped her gymnastics training after the last Olympics and did the whole DWTS and tv gigs. She didn't even do her senior year of high school. Then she substained a major knee injury while skiing, just as she was getting back into practicing.

Gabby Douglas looks really good right now. So it will be nice to have another Iowa athlete in the games,...even though she is a transplant Iowan.

Shawn Johnson lost 25 pounds after ‘hurtful’ fat talk

    By Chris Chase | Fourth-Place Medal – 3 hours ago.. .

Shawn Johnson in 2010 (L) and last week on 'Today'

Gold medalist gymnast Shawn Johnson gained, then lost, 25 pounds during her three-year break from international competition, she told reporters on Monday.

The 20-year-old, who won three silver medals and one gold in Beijing and is attempting a comeback for London, discussed the weight gain, and her subsequent body image problems at the USOC media summit on Monday. She said her fluctuating weight led to "hurtful" comments in the tabloids.

"That whole process kind of broke me down and taught me something," she said, according to USA Today. "People put too much emphasis on looks."

Even when she was at the top of the gymnastics world, Johnson battled weight issues. "I was at the Olympic Games winning medals and I still doubted my image," she said. "I doubted what I looked like. That's sad. Girls should be taught different than that. I think everyone should be taught different than that."

Johnson put on the weight after the 2008 Olympics and her 2009 victory on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." She tore her ACL during a freak skiing accident in early 2010 and added some heft to her athletic 4-foot-9 frame. Johnson said she'd perform Internet searches for her name and was horrified at the results.

She's not a certainty to make the U.S. team but is excited for the opportunity to compete for a spot at the upcoming Olympic trials.

"I'm getting stronger on a daily basis," she told Fox Sports last week. "I'm excited for June. This time around, I've taken a whole new approach and mentality."

Rebecca Bross has announced that she has decided from now on she is only training beam and bars. She will no longer be training on floor or vault. Many people feel that she just blew her chances at a spot on the team with this decision. It looks like she's hoping to be named to the team as the bars specialist that Marta was hinting around about wanting, but unfortunately I don't think her bars are strong enough for that. She had a better chance, in my opinion, as an AA.

Bross! Ugh, I've never liked the girl's gymnastics but I want her on the team. She's been through so much shit over the past few years, poor kid. Not to mention those awful knees! Talk about a terrible body for gymnastics. She has so much going against her but she keeps plugging along, she's really won me over. I think there's a spot for her... ironically I think Nastia is who's really standing in her way. There's no way both are going to be on the team especially now that they're training the same events. I can't imagine what it's like in that gym with the two of them training side by side and Nastia's dad coaching both.

The Classics is coming up soon and I'm excited to see where everyone stands. I've always been a fan of Nastia's gymnastics so I can't wait to see her comeback. I really hope it's not half assed.

Sorry to double post, but did anyone see clips from Classics this weekend? Loved Nastia's return. Gabby's bars are awesome. Aly and Jordyn are still ugh. Bross... I'm really feeling sorry for her at this point. She works SO hard but the writing's on the wall. She was pretty bad.
