ANDY RODDICK FALLS TO AMERICAN ISNER

FROM THE BBC

Page last updated at 01:24 GMT, Sunday, 6 September 2009 02:24 UK

Federer through as Roddick falls

US OPEN
Venue: Flushing Meadows, New York Date: 31 August - 13 September
BBC coverage: Live text commentaries on the website from 1600 BST each day, regular updates on 5 live, full commentary on 5 live sports extra in week two, both finals on 5 live

Federer will face either James Blake or Tommy Robredo in the last 16
Defending champion Roger Federer recovered from a lacklustre start to beat Lleyton Hewitt 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 and reach round four of the US Open.

Hewitt broke in the ninth game before serving out the opening set, but the Swiss responded well in the second.
Top seed Federer was forced to dig deep in the third before closing out in solid style to set up a meeting with Tommy Robredo or James Blake.

Fourth seed Novak Djokovic also battled through with a win over Jesse Witten.

Fernando Verdasco hit back from a break down in the final set to edge out German veteran Tommy Haas 3-6 7-5 7-6 (10-8) 1-6 6-4.
The number 10 seed from Spain will play the winner of the all-American match between fifth seed Andy Roddick and John Isner.

Russia's Nikolay Davydenko, who is still yet to drop a set in the tournament, was made to work for his 6-4 7-5 7-5 win over world number 161 Marco Chiudinelli.
The eighth seed will face Robin Soderling in the fourth round after the Swede saw off American Sam Querrey 6-2 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-1.

Federer, the world number one, struggled to find a way past a scampering Hewitt in the early stages of the match and saw his break in the sixth game immediately wiped out by one from the Australian.

i think Verdasco is going to beat Isner. Isner shot his wad tonight against Roddick. Fun match though.

I'm also SO glad that Oudin shit canned Maria Sharapova. One less screecher in this tournament, the better.

That Isner/Roddick match was amazing, as was the Oudin/Sharapova match. I'll hold my judgement on Isner until he plays Verdasco - if he wins, maybe he's the real deal! As for Oudin, Sharapova was nowhere near her best; she beat herself. Who does Oudin meet next?

like any tournaments, as long as andy murray doesnt win, im fine with the result. LOL

too bad about andy roddick. im a john isner fan by default bcos he's a fellow bulldog! i remember his matches when i was in school.

It is great to see Kim Clijsters back and winning - I forgot how much personality she brought to the game. Glad Rafa and Murray are thru too.

I love Rafa. I've never been given the impression he's sleasy, I think he seems sweet and down-to-earth. I appreciate Federer's talent, but my god he comes across as a spoilt brat.

God, the Rafa/Roger thing is just as tiring as the Angelina/Jennifer thing.
