Uh no, France was heavily favored to win.

Well there you go, fucking Aussie Channel 7 commentators again. I'm watching with the sound OFF from now on.

Edit: It wasn't a 4 second win, it was a fingertip (8 100ths of a second to be precise)

    FRA 3:08.32

The volunteers assigned to Phelps in the Athens Olympics said he was the most adorably nice guy ever to them. Never wanted anything. They also said that there had been a problem with his shower and he fixed it himself because he didn't want to make a fuss.

A*O, I haven't observed other athletes doing this or not, but the US hooting and hollering was NOT a case of bad sportsmanship or lack of class at all!

First, it was such a close race that who wouldn't be excited that you won by a hair? And against the favored team?

But most of all, how excited would you be if you won against someone so arrogant they said this to the press (for the world to hear!) right before competition:
"The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for."
Now that's a lack of class and sportsmanship, not to mention plain obnoxious. I'd say the Americans were gracious by comparison.

Oh and I think the 4 second thing SSDiva mentioned might have been by how much they broke the world record for the relay? They were all pretty far ahead.

And the US was the first to go over and comfort the French guy that just barely missed. They knew how he felt. I thought that showed great heart.
As far as Mark Spitz-they say his name constantly-how could he be forgotten??

And if you think THEY were whooping and hollering, you ought to have been in my living room!

Maybe she meant that it wasn't a 4 second win, but nearly 4 full seconds under the previous world record - a record set that morning.

re. Spitz. I get that he was the superstar swimmer since the 70's. I grew up swimming and he was the best there was, no one could touch him. Well, Michael Phelps can and I think will beat his record (or at least tie it). Spitz should be proud of the fact that he set the bar so high that it takes a complete "freak of nature" to be able to beat him. **I say that with utmost respect, but there's no other way to describe Phelps**

That is nothing but good ol' Baltimore upbringing!! He and his sisters were raised alone by their mom, when their father walked out on them. So, I guess he did the handy work around the house, when mom couldn't afford outside help.

Where is the Dad,do they ever say? All I hear is he left when his son was 7. She seems to wear nice outfits-I am glad she has no more worries.

For the record I think ALL competitors who go ballistic and In Your Face when they win lack decorum. Maybe it's my British blood.

To be fair, though, does anyone remember Gary Hall from the 2004 US Swim team, and how he spewed some similar arrogance towards the Aussie swim team? I had to look it up to find the exact wording:
Hall publicly announced that the Americans would smash the Australian team "like guitars". Hall swam last in the team against Australian Ian Thorpe. Thorpe had a better start and came up a body length in front of Hall. Hall managed a lead but Thorpe fought back, ending the traditional American dominance of the event. (The Australian team famously responded to Hall's remarks after the race by playing air guitar on the pool deck.)
Edit: My memory's worse than I thought - it was the 2000 games in Sydney. But you get the point.

Gary Hall Jr. is a cocky bastard. Everyone knows that. It wasn't out of the ordinary for him to have a quote like that. If you watched the Olympic Trials in Omaha you might remember him (GH Jr.) coming out in a cape that said "Godfather of Swimming" or something equally as lame. Good for the Australian team for beating the US in that event, maybe it humbled GH Jr somewhat? (doubtful)
