They didn't make an ice cream based on Jerry's race either. It was a play on his name. So why not do the same for Lin? How about lingonberry?

I notice B&J's haven't been sued by Jerry Garcia's estate because Jerry didn't taste like cherries while he was alive.
If they named it "Cherry-my Lin" flavor after Jeremy Lin, that would make more sense. Adding fortune cookies to "Chinese" something up is tacky and stereotypical. As mentioned, fortune cookies are NOT Chinese cuisine, just a gimmicky American invention.

Fortune cookies have even less to do with "real" Chinese food than plastic hot sauce packets have to do with "real" Mexican food. It's an American invention heavily influenced by drive-thru/take-out culture.

I believe the original Ben & Jerry long sold their company for major dough. But whoever does own it now, they're either insensitive, ignorant, or just wanted to drum up free press. Stupid move either way.

I’m offended — not by the racial element, but by the fact that Ben & Jerry would foist something as inedible as fortune cookies on their customers.

Fortune cookies have even less to do with "real" Chinese food than plastic hot sauce packets have to do with "real" Mexican food. It's an American invention heavily influenced by drive-thru/take-out culture.
Then why aren't people picketing Taco Bell every day? (Better question is, why are they just not eating that shit, but that's another thread.)

The last time I had food in Mexico, the sauces were included on the table in case us Americans wanted to desecrate the restaurant's food with them. We didn't. We were stereotyped too.

But if that's a stereotype and the fortune cookies are a stereotype, what's the difference? When I pick up take-out from my favorite Chinese restaurant, they include fortune cookies. Every time. When I go to my local sushi restaurant, fortune cookies are included with the bill. Every time. Of COURSE they're stereotypical - oriental places of business have made sure that we think that fortune cookies are a typical oriental "food", just like Taco Bell wants us to believe that their shit is Mexican.

I still think people are just looking to be upset these days.

Going to a restaurant and getting food that isn't authentic isn't the same issue at all. I guess if they made a fried chicken and watermelon ice cream for a black basketball player people would think he should just "get over it" but I would still be getting upset. I'll use any excuse.

Re: Taiwan. I think the way I heard it was that they had a very distinct aboriginal population but had been invaded repeatedly by both China and Japan. Japan did a lot of damage to the aboriginal population, including both extermination and assimilation. And during the fall of the Republic of China, waves of mainland Chinese (at least 2 million) fleeing Mao then fled to Taiwan, and basically took over.

On the ice cream flavor, it would have been nice for Ben & Jerry's to actually reach out to Jeremy Lin, tell him the idea they had and even solicit his ideas about flavors associated with Chinese cuisine that could be used for a Linn-sanity type of variety.

Lol, I'm just going to get some green t-shirts or tank tops and write it on them with gold glitter. When I told one of my sisters-in-law, she was mad......because she didn't think of it first!
