Why do certain athletes spit a lot?

Sorry about this vulgar question but I was just wondering why they do it...
e.g. baseball and hockey players, boxers (but I think they bleed in the mouth after getting punched so maybe just spitting out the blood). I can't think of any other atheletes, I don't think I've seen basketball players spitting...

I'd appreciate your insight.

Is it like a cultural thing cuz it seems to only happen in certain sports. Like is it about manhood or something?

My guess in baseball is it's a holdover from when almost every player chewed tobacco. Some probably still spit out of habit, some because it's expected and some because they still chew that vile shit.

Back in the day when I was athletic I used to spit when running anything over a few miles. It wasn't constant spitting but every once in a while I had to. I also noticed some runners spitting when I was at track/cross country meets. So who knows. But for me I usually did not have to spit unless it was over 5 miles. Maybe all that intense breathing loosens any crap in your lungs. Gross I know.

Oh that kind of makes sense though I've never seen track n filed athletes spitting. It's usually the baseball players that I see spitting most often.

Football players here are always spitting, I think some of them just think it looks 'hard'. Then you get all the young school kids at bus stops spitting because they think it makes the look like Rooney.
