Former UNLV star Chris 'Flash' Richardson, 28, died in his sleep

PHOENIX - Chris “Flash” Richardson, a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, died in his sleep Wednesday while on tour in Japan, an official with the team said Thursday. He was 28.

Although the cause of death was not yet confirmed, Richardson likely died of natural causes, said Globetrotters spokesman Brett Meister.

The players were at a U.S. military base in Sasebo, Japan, as part of an annual holiday tour. The Globetrotters are in their 83rd consecutive season of touring the world.

Meister said the organization was still in shock over Richardson’s death.

A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, the 6-foot-7 Richardson played at UNLV and joined the Globetrotters shortly after his college career ended.

Richardson was known for his dunking skills and a genial disposition, according to Meister.

“He was a great Globetrotter on and off the court. He just had a very engaging smile that would light up the room,” Meister said.

Richardson was also active with organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs as well as adoption agencies.

Funeral plans were incomplete but team officials said the memorial service would take place in Corpus Christi.

    Richardson’s survivors include his mother.

    Chris "Flash" Richardson Passes Away
    12/10/2008 9:30 AM

(PHOENIX , Dec. 10, 2008) – Harlem Globetrotter Chris “Flash” Richardson, 28, tragically passed away this morning in Sasebo, Japan during the team’s annual holiday tour of American military bases throughout Asia. The actual cause of his death is not known at this time, but it is believed to be of natural causes.

“Chris was a wonderful young man who loved life and loved being a Globetrotter,” said Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider. “The entire Globetrotter family is heartbroken by his passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with his mother, Brenda, and his children.”

A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, the 6-7 Richardson was known for his exceptional dunking ability, one of the skills that helped earn him All-America honors at Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi and carried him through a successful college career at UNLV, where he helped lead the Runnin’ Rebels to a Mountain West Conference title and NCAA tournament berth in 2000. Richardson made his home in Las Vegas.

In true Globetrotter fashion, he took pride in taking part in community activities, and was active with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs and adoption agencies.

Further details, including memorial service information, will be announced when they become available.

I doubt the natural causes thing.. especially since it doesn't say he suffered from any unusual ailments. Interesting.

Sorry, but most 28 year olds don't die from 'natural causes'.

This is so sad! And yes-he could have had an undiagnosed heart condition,a genetic flaw causing an aneurysm-any number of things. 28 year oldds die of natural causes every day.
