Default Cricket: Pakistan loses game -- coach murdered

I know you people know little and care less about the noble game of cricket but this story is just appalling and is potentially a HUGE scandal.

Nutshell: During the Cricket World Cup competition in the West Indies no-hopers Ireland beat Pakistan (probably one of the world top 3 teams). The following day the Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was discovered unconscious in his hotel room and later died in hospital. A post mortem has revealed that he was strangled.

Good luck getting another coach after that, Pakistanis.

Update: An arrest has been made of a 'non-Jamaican national'.

Good grief! Poor man. What exactly is a "non-Jamacian national".

Update #2: No arrest was made. It's all rumour and speculation at the moment. Here's another link.

It's really scary esp. since Bob Woolmer was a great guy. If it is indeed connected to match-fixing, then I have very little hope left for the game. The emphasis on money-making has an upper hand over the game these days. The ICC needs to change its priorities. Obviously the Anti-betting committee or whatever it is called has more work to do.

Some of the strongest speculation seems to be around the idea that he was about to write a book and reveal something about match fixing/gambling that someone didn't want him to tell.
A big boy did it and ran away.

^^^^ It's possible, although it seems more than coincidental that he was murdered almost immediately after Pakistan's humiliating loss. Or perhaps someone was planning a hit anyway and the timing was a useful distraction. I gather the captain and assistant coach have been re-interviewed. Other snippets reveal that there was no sign of forced entry into his hotel room and all his personal effects including cash, credit cards, etc were left undisturbed.

I heard the draft of his book is missing. It could well be a rumour.

I think Greg Chapell is watching his back now that India is out too.

Now this scandal has caused an interesting little change in the balance of cricketing power with the Asian nations wielding so much power and influence in the ICB, during betting scandals and accusations of illegal bowling actions, and lately Drug allegations noting would ever be done to punish offenders because of the threat of Pakistan / India and Sri Lanka taking their collective bats and balls and starting their own competition far away from scrutiny.

Pakistan - embarrasing or did they throw the game against Ireland?
India - With Tendulker on the way out, they are obviously over educated and under par (you cant rest on your laurels without repercusions)
Sri Lanka - Ive gotta admit that Malinga guy is fucking quick

But I digress, the threatening actions of these countries dont matter if they under perform in the big tournaments. Im sure Ireland and Bangladesh would be more than happy to step in to fill any voids left if either or both dynasties walked away

I have to say my first reaction when Pakistan lost to Ireland was that the match must have been thrown. It's not the first time this kind of thing has happened with teams from the sub-continent where gambling on these games is HUGE business. Remember the Hanse Cronje (sp) scandal and that stuff that Shane Warne got implicated in? I didn't see the actual game and so can't say whether Pakistan played freakishly badly, or Ireland played freakishly well but it's very odd either way. And certainly not worth dying for.

The body language of the Pakis was demonstrated side by side from the Ireland game to their last one....and it looked pretty damning. But again, the Irish buggers wouldnt go away against England either.

I believe that the main persons of interest are the 3 guys acting as gophers and drivers for the team, bookies Im sure have something to do with things Im faily cirtain though.

No one deserves to die over a game, I agree
