WAtched some equestrian (pretty) and badminton earlier. Gymnastics on tonight (looks like, anyway).

Opening ceremony was subdued compared to some in the past-who can forget Beijing's in 2008-but the athletes looked happy to be there. Don't think I will get used to the vast empty seats at the venues. I'm frankly surprised that Japan has lagged so much in vaccination numbers.

I love the men's gymnastics uniforms.

I find I am actually really missing the audience, esp during things like gymnastics and the 100 meter when that comes up. Swimming usually has a pretty loud crowd too.

loved the tunisian swimmer who was so excited about his win.

i get tired of the jeopardy-esque stoicism.

I’ve been trying to keep up with the tennis but that’s it. I need to watch more, I usually really enjoy the summer games.

OMG, that opening night ceremony with the flags. It was like watching a graduation ceremony, just kept going, and going, and going.

I saw that USA got a gold medal in fencing - first ever, I think (women, foil). The woman who got it is so cute. Also, the woman martial artist who got gold - great. They showed a clip of when she knew she got the gold and running down to hug her coach. Freaking awesome.

i hate the rah-rah nationalism of the games and the medal counting and flag worshipping but if you ignore that it's fun to watch the actual events. i don't think i've ever sat through the opening or closing ceremonies at the olympics though, they've pretty much always been lame and jingoistic.

i don't usually watch the opening and closing ceremonies (except for the london olympics - the bit with daniel craig was funny).

but i love watching the summer olympics and hearing the stories about how the athletes trained. i find it very inspirational.

A moment of collective eyeroll across the globe was seen.

Skateboarding by far has been the most exciting sport I've watched so far.

Gymnastics...*sigh* I hope Simone is OK physically, it seems like mentally she might be all set with this which is unfortunate.
