I seriously do wonder if they know how their snide comments are viewed by the rest of the world or if they give a shit at all.

Only when they come to the US to make coin in ice shows...but that might change, with ticket sales down like they are.

Irina Slutskaya has to be stupid to think her remarks about Sarah Hughes "liking her cheeseburgers" (referring to Hughes' unfortunate weight gain post-Salt Lake City) would not make it back to the States. Golden Skate and FSUniverse have international fan bases, and skater articles are regularly translated and shared.

    New keyboard please!

During the Torino games, some skating site referred to her as "The Back-Humping Troglodyte". It made me pee on myself!

I'm excited about hockey too. The male figure skaters were interesting with all the drama. The women seem to be doing a bit better. Pairs and ice dancing is boring as all get out to me.

I'll take hockey over the cheese factor any time though!

    Either that or feeling screwed!
Before they got caught with what was called a "block" the scoring was always slanted one way. They got caught in the ice dancing scandal, they voted for France and in return for their vote the French voted for the them. It was sad because the French team didn't need the slant, it was Gwendol and Marina (Russian skating for France) they were truly great. It was a huge mess, one they couldn't get out of. There was talk about Marina bringing in the Russia mafia and all sorts of stuff, it was a huge network.

I remember the first time I saw Irina, she had bushy hair, red blotched cheeks and was rolly polly. I don't know maybe we only hear one side of things but it seems to me the Russians sure like to fling trash talk.

    ****

I'm loving the short program, either they are only showing the best or this is the best womens skating I've ever seen.

It depends on how he is wearing his hair. Sometimes he is hot, sometimes fug IMO.

I enjoyed their programs in 97-98 and 01-02. Their Riverdance freeskate was energetic and amazing to me. I've always found Russian ice dancers to be mannered and vulgar. All this talk about "classic" Russian skating was mostly gyno lifts, ugly costumes and Eurotrash pop music. But Bourne & Kraatz were class acts about the whole thing. But I always wondered what kept them from complaining more.

I've heard the Russian mafia gets a cut of some of the elite skaters' earnings. There was talk about 1999 World Champ Maria Butyrskaya's car getting blown up because she refused. Don't know how true it is.

Yagudin accused Sale & Pelletier of whining as well. Easy to say when you had your gold around your neck, albeit he skated well and deserved it.

Irina was a cute, energetic kid who never really grew artistically as a skater.

It was a great comp. I hope Rochette gets on the podium. Bless her heart for skating after her mom died like that.

well for me that was big news, I always thought the guy was major fugly - then he did some after the event talk and he was down right cute

Victor was quiet but not Shea-Lynn, my gosh she ranted and I loved her for it because it was all bogus! AND we had ice dancers quit because they knew there was no point in even trying.. grrrrr. OK I just learned something. I had read that Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev (USA) had quit skating but in fact they went on to compete in the Utah Olympics - now no one else may care but they were my favorite skaters so insert shocked face here. ANYWAY Shea-Lynn might have looked all tiny and sweet but she was one heck of a athlete.

It's true. Wasn't she pretty and graceful? To bad she couldn't jump for squat. I think it shocked the world to see how determined some countries were, winning was everything and if they cheated so what. The worse for me was the 94 Olympics when Pasha (who changed her name to Oksana for her "acting" career) Grishuk and her partner Evgeny Platov were brought out as the King and Queen of the olympics blah blah blah and she slipped and almost fell IN ICE DANCING!! AND they won the gold!!!

Yagudin accused Sale & Pelletier of whining as well. Easy to say when you had your gold around your neck, albeit he skated well and deserved it.

Right before the olympics we got the story of how Pelletier left his wife for Sale so I wasn't feeling the love for them. OK I confess I cheered for the Russians because Anton went to Russia to rescue poor Elaina from her mean partner who hit her with his skate and she was in a coma for a long time and ....... yep thats what I went with. Of course after it was all over our pairs skater kyoko Ina who dumped Jason Dungeon (married to Yuka Sato) to skate with John Zimmerman failed the drug test and didn't defend herself instead she said some thing close to "bite me"

Irina was a cute, energetic kid who never really grew artistically as a skater.

and I have to feel bad because she also has that deadly blood disorder too but how come we always have to be the nice guys and take that crap? She was rolly polly when she first came on the scene but she was a cute rolly polly..... and our darn country cheered for her - when were weren't hoping she'd fall so Michele Kwan would win.

It was a great comp. I hope Rochette gets on the podium. Bless her heart for skating after her mom died like that.

I don't know how she's doing it. When my Mom passed away 250 thousand people died in the sunami and I didn't know a thing about it, I was in another world. I hope she does well. But I have to cheer for Platt because she's the home girl. It's nice to see Brian Orser coaching an olympic hopeful. The ladies really look good.

I have to cheer for Kusha (Ksenia) Makarova, who trains sometimes at our rink who is in 12th place after the short. She is the present Russian Ladies' Champion and such a nice young lady.

I still hope she falls, even though she's retired! It must have been difficult for her not to uphold the "Russian Tradition" like her fellow skaters in the other disciplines. Effie, we ALL got pain!

It has turned into a great comp. I prefer mens' skating - have for the past couple seasons, but the Asian women are so impressive I have to watch them and I am rooting for Joannie as well. She has gotten better each year - her silver medal at Worlds was no fluke. That is all I am gonna say; I don't wanna jinx her.

Legend blames Russian officials for skating flop
Irina Rodnina, 3-time Olympic champion, launches a scathing attack

MOSCOW (AFP) Triple Olympic champion Irina Rodnina has launched a scathing attack on the head of the Russian figure skating federation, Valentin Piseyev, blaming him for his team's dismal performance at Vancouver.

"I consider Piseyev to be personally responsible for our failure in figure skating at Vancouver," said Rodnina, who won all of the competitions where she performed during her career, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda daily.

"The national federation's top officials shouldn't sit pompously at the stands during the competitions but should contact their colleagues, referees, to form relations with them and to be a part of the interantional federation's life," Rodnina said.

"But serious people in the figure skating world do not want to deal with him. They have no respect for him," she added.

"Meanwhile, Piseyev's reputation is not just the reputation of a single person as he represents the entire country."

Rodnina said that she believed that Piseyev should resign after his team's disastrous performance in Vancouver, where Russia is set to finish without an Olympic gold medal in figure skating for the first time in 50 years.

"Piseyev should resign after the disaster in Vancouver but I do not believe in miracles," Rodnina said.

"I hope that the federation will elect somebody else for the post at its special meeting later this year. We need a fresh and unbiased person in the post. And the new federation head should rathre be a highly-skilled manager than a figure skating specialist."

Rodnina also blamed Leonid Tyagachev, the head of Russia's Olympic Committee (ROC), for the poor Russian showing at the 2010 Olympics, saying he should be held responsible for the country's failures in the early days of the Games.

"Tyagachev was in charge of spending the budget funding for the preparation of our Olympic team for the Games. And he is personally responsible for every rouble and every dollar from the country's budget."

"The entire country was shocked with our athletes performances in the first eignt days of the Games and, I believe, we have the right to ask him (Tyagachev) to give an account on all of the ROC expenses in the recent years."

Well, ya gotta blame somebody. So far, the athletes don't seem to think they're responsible.
