Just watched the video of the guy hitting the pole. Damn that was fast.

Yeah it was. He must have had horrible internal injuries, hitting that fast and just stopping immediately. He looked unconscious(or dead) instantly.

And only 21 years old. R.I.P.

It look like he clocked the pole with his head. Likely died instantly. 88MPH, completely off the track. That's some video.

A lot of the lugers crashed on that track today; one of the women was knocked unconscious.

Why are the poles that close to the track? Why aren't they padded(likely wouldn't do much at that speed though)? and why aren't the sides higher after the curve to contain the sleds/riders?

They need to fix that. Downhill skiers have netting to stop them. They have to fix that right away.

I just saw it too and it was kinda disturbing to see, even though there's no gore or anything. Watching someone's last moments is haunting.

BAD design. Slamming into those poles at that speed; the poor guy didn't stand a chance.

Who just "sang" the Canadian national anthem? I didn't catch the name because my ears were bleeding.

You called it. The opening ceremonies are on right now and they're pretty much exactly this.
