Hope Solo Tests Positive for Banned Substance

Soccer star Hope Solo has tested positive for the diuretic Canrenone, a banned substance, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Monday.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper on the United States team accepted a public warning and says the positive test was purely an accident, NBC reports. She will not be prohibited from competing in the Olympic Games in London later this month.

"I took a medication prescribed by my personal doctor for pre-menstrual purposes that I did not know contained a diuretic," she said in a statement through U.S. Soccer.

"Once informed of this fact, I immediately cooperated with USADA and shared with them everything they needed to properly conclude that I made an honest mistake, and that the medication did not enhance my performance in any way," she said.

U.S. Soccer supported Solo and released a similar statement.

The goalkeeper took home a gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, danced her way to the semi-finals with Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Dancing with the Stars and bared (almost) all in last year's ESPN Body Issue.

Why do these athletes claim they didn't know what they were taking was illegal - even if it is something like a diuretic. If I was an athlete and my doctor prescribed it, I sure as hell would be doing my research before taking the damn stuff.

Not on this case specifically, but do you know everything they put in any medication you take? Every trade name of every drug and whether it's on some list? How in the world are dieuretics a performance enhancing drug for soccer?

Diuretics (I think, haven't googled) are supposedly a masking agent for steroids, which is why they're banned.

ETA: Yes, google is my friend, and apparently one of the reasons they're banned is because they dilute the urine so as to hide any traces of steroids.

I can see how this could easily happen.

If I were a professional athlete and had to take drug tests I would be careful as hell. Of course I don't look at every ingredient in the drugs I take, but I am not subjected to random drug testing either.

I would be surprised if any athlete didn't know diuretics were banned, especially at that level. I remember back when Shane Warne was a fat bogan he was banned for a year from playing cricket for taking diuretics for "weight loss" (and blamed his mum for giving them to him) and that guy was never about being a superfit athlete unless pies, beer and cigarettes enhance performance. Maybe drug testing isn't as big a deal in soccer so they're not as aware but I'd find that hard to believe.

I am sure she knows diuretics are illegal, she stated she had medicine for premenstrual issues and that med happened to contain a diuretic. I could see that happening because it's not like the word "diuretic" will be listed on the bottle or probably even on the paperwork, it would have another name for the med that relieves the bloating/water. Plus a PMS medication can contain several different medicines to treat the PMS symptoms. She could be lying, but this seems very possible.

^Well her doctor fucked up then because he prescribed it. He should know what drugs are on the banned list. It's not like she bought something over the counter without reading (or understanding) the contents, but her doctor should know better if he's treating a professional athlete.

I think most female athletes are on BC Pills full time, blocking their periods completely.

Normal younger women are doing this now, skipping the week of sugar pills and moving into the new pack. Some only have 2 or 3 periods a year.

Athletes have been doing it for decades.

It probably was her gyno prescribing the meds and not her regular sports doctor.

There are a lot of synthetics and components that make up a drug.. Then you have to add in if it was the original or if more things were added to reduce the price to mass produce it to make it a generic brand!! I believe her..

You'd think you could trust your doctor, especially when your a member of the USA womens team. You'd think they would have staff doctors monitoring this shit for them since they represent the USA and will be going to the Olympics.
