Default Womens Gymnastics - Olympic Team

Is there anyone else on GR who enjoys women's gymnastics? I'm interested in seeing who will end up making the Olympic team this year.

I think Shawn Johnson might find herself in a position similar to Vanessa Atler in the 2000 trials - the fan favorite who was always assumed to be a shoe-in, but ends up not making it. I like her, but she's regressed since the 2008 games and I feel like since her comeback, she's been very hit-or-miss.

*rubbing my hands in gleeful anticipation that this will turn into a big thread like the ice skating one*

Remember people - lots and lots of video! I want to see ribbons and balance beams and parallel bars everywhere!

God, I've barely followed gymnastics since the days of Khorkina but I'll try with this thread.

... suuuure, make the wee sick lil' aussie do all the work.

To get this party started, here is the famous Nadia Comaneci. She scored a perfect 10 on her floor routine back in 1976 - before these fancy shock absorbing floor mats had been invented! I've nicked all the following vids from usagymnastics.org's youtube feed.

Don't you just want to tell the commentators to shut. The Fuck. UP! They have nothing of interest, or import, to add - they seem to blather on mindlessly because they love the sound of their own voices. This is just a sample of the day 1 vids for the 2009/10 Visa Championships.

Here's some a gymnast who stacked it (for variety):

I was a little girl when Nadia Comaneci got the first 10 and I can remember the confusion over the scoring because it couldn't display double figures and I thought she'd done something wrong and got 1.0. I was distraught until they explained it.

I was a competitive elite gymnast when I was young and still do it in a recreational class. I follow the sport avidly.

I really like to watch old films, the sport has changed over the years with all the point code reworking and I think it's lost some grace. It's more acrobatic now, which is interesting to see, but for sheer athletic beauty and artistry you cannot touch Tourischeva, Mostepanova, Yurchenko, Comaneci natch, Ungaraneu, the old east Germans, Onodi. Khorkhina was the last gymnast I saw with artistry. The old Sovs were the best, technically perfect and ballet trained. They defined amplitude. Just pure art.

and the Queen of all gymnasts- the great Vera Caslavska- in silent protest against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia at the 1968 Olympics. She had spent the two weeks prior to the games in hiding from arrest.

Caslavska won more Olympic individual event titles than any other gymnast, a record she has now held for over 40 years. She is also the only gymnast, male or female, ever who has won Olympic gold on every individual event. Between 1964 and 1968 Caslavska was undefeated in the all-around in major international competition.

BTW - Caslavska was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 in a major competition- she scored two of them at the 1967 European championships. Comaneci was the first woman to do it in an Olympic games.

I have to admit that I've never been too excited about the American gymnasts. The only one who vaguely caught my attention was Nastia Liukin and even then I thought Pavlova was more elegant.

Does anyone know whether Mustafina is back from her knee injury yet?

This was the last 10 given in an Olympics. Her first tumbling pass is one of the best I've ever seen

and here's the great Boginskaya scoring 10. They don't dance as much anymore, it's a shame.-

I'm a little younger than Comaneci, and I remember watching her in the '76 Olympics. She seemed beautiful, mysterious, and perfect. I still have a crush on her.
