Default Let the Lindsey hype begin: Lindsey Vonn is Sports Illustrated cover girl

    (Sex sells, looks are everything!)

Let the Lindsey hype begin: Vonn is Sports Illustrated cover girl - Fourth-Place Medal - Olympics Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Lindsey Vonn is hoping the Sports Illustrated cover jinx doesn't cross international borders. America's great Winter Olympic hope is featured on the front of SI's Winter Olympic preview issue, which hit newsstands Wednesday.

Vonn's semi-provocative pose has drawn the predictable ire from those who claim that it objectifies her. She's an athlete, not a sex symbol, the chorus inevitably reminds us. They have a point in taking issue with SI; the magazine rarely features women athletes on the cover and its annual swimsuit issue has been a focus of protests for decades. But Vonn's cover is different.
The pose at least resembles the tuck stance skiers like Vonn take when barrelling down the hill. It's exaggerated, of course, but not gratuitously so. It's not as if SI put her in a bikini in a Whistler hot tub.
Also, this is Vonn's moment. If she wins multiple golds in Vancouver, Vonn has the potential to become a major crossover star. She'd be like Michael Phelps, only with better looks and an actual personality. Landing on the SI cover is a good way for her to start the Vonn saturation campaign. It's as important for her as it is the magazine. The pose is suggestive, sure, but it's not objectifying. The headline reads "America's best woman skier ever", for Jean-Claude's sake! Why can't she be both the best skier in the world and really, really attractive too? Tom Brady's a great athlete and a handsome dude and I don't hear people whine when he's shirtless in GQ.
Most importantly, this cover is almost identical to the one that ran on SI's Winter Olympic preview in 1992. That one featured a gentleman named A.J. Kitt and I'm pretty sure nobody was complaining about that one being too provocative.

i don't see it as suggestive or semi-provocative.
it's just a cool pic and a better cover than the one pictured below, imo.

yes, sex sells. but anyone who thinks this is what sex looks like, is a huge prude and needs to get laid.
there's nothing suggestive about it. it's a picture of a skier. skiing. with a tacky headband and cheesy 80s christie brinkley hair and make up.

Lindsey Vonn poses for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue - Fourth-Place Medal - Olympics Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Days after her controversial Sports Illustrated cover hit newsstands, American skiing sensation Lindsey Vonn is back on the pages of the venerable sports magazine.
Vonn, a favorite to win three gold medals at next week's Winter Olympics, is featured in a multi-page photo spread in SI's annual swimsuit issue, which was released Tuesday. Inside the issue (and online at SI.com), there are pictures of Vonn in a ski chalet, sitting in a sauna, standing on the slopes and posing with a rescue helicopter, all while wearing various bikinis, of course.
If you were one of the misguided few who were upset with Vonn's semi-suggestive cover pose, then these 45 swimsuit pictures are likely to fan the flames even more. Calls of objectification and sexism by the media will doubtlessly intensify. It's a tired refrain though.
Vonn isn't a good looking athlete, she's a great athlete who happens to be good looking. She's Chris Evert, not Anna Kournikova. (The latter once posed for SI, the former did not.) By the end of these Olympics there's a reasonable chance Vonn will become one of the most decorated American Winter Olympians of all time. It will have everything to do with her athletic ability and nothing to do with how attractive she is. So she looks good in a swimsuit. Why shouldn't she use that to help market herself?
To fans of sport, one thing has long been clear. In two weeks, it should become readily apparent to everyone else, including the critics: Lindsey Vonn is way more than just a pretty face.

I see she is hurt. Not badly but it may hurt her chances at winning all the medals they thought she would win.

she looks great! On her interview tonight she seemed upbeat, she has a few days of rest since the weather has delayed her event, says she feels better everyday. Shes tough, I think she will do well

I can't say I'd heard of her until the Olympics. Obviously she's the one to beat, but I have to admit, I'm not impressed. I'm tired of hearing her constantly go on and on about her injuries. Is she always such a whiner? Just shut up and get the job done like every other athlete out there facing challenges or not.

^That's what my husband was just saying last night, he thought she whines too much about her injuries.
