All joking aside...I do not understand why someone would want to conduct an experiment that could have the potential to destroy the world...

Presumably because those conducting the experiment didn't believe it had the potential to destroy the world.

I can't believe anyone thinks this would destroy the world.

THIS HOWEVER in no way rules out the possibility, incredibly unlikely as it may be, that when they begin collision testing they will obliterate the world as we know it! Truth is, and most experts admits this - they are looking into the unknown with the LHC. (and thats the whole point of it, isn't it?)

Just to clarify MY stance on this - everything will be fine, they're not gonna blow up the world ... I just think it is fun to think about the possibility!

You need to check out those doomsday loving, end-of-days boards. They were practically foaming at the mouths.

Is god trying to tell us something?

Transformer glitch shuts down biggest atom smasher

GENEVA - The world's largest particle collider malfunctioned within hours of its launch to great fanfare, but its operator didn't report the problem for a week.

Before the problem occurred, scientists had said it would probably be several weeks before the first significant collisions were attempted.

I thought I had read somewhere that it had already been turned on...

And obviously if it had been, nothing happened.

Edit: Atom-smasher hit by electrical hitch

Apparently they had already started it up on September 10th.

"The September 10 switch-on saw the testing of a clockwise beam, and then an anticlockwise beam. The first collisions are not expected for a number of weeks, given the long process of testing the LHC's equipment."

Fuck, that's comforting...

Stupid scientists need to stop messing with this kind of shit...it's bad enough with all of the doomsday prophesies for 12/31/12...

Ugh.

I've been enjoying the way sundry members of the media keeps misspelling it as the

"LARGE HARDON COLLIDER!"

And of course it "malfunctioned" before it got anywhere....
