I was in the super market yesterday and normal loaves of bread... they were 1.50 each (THREE US Dollars).
With the wheat shortage and the fuel going up...... no more butties in this house!

Yes I remember when gas was cheap. I also remember when dinosaurs roamed the Earth - neither of which will ever return. I don't think there is necessarily a shortage of wheat, rice, dairy, etc - what's gone up is the price of truck fuel to get these basics to our supermarkets.

I'm not a doom and gloom merchant but now we seem to be moving into the recession part of the economic cycle there are a lot more factors involved and I don't think things will ever be the same again, even when the cycle eventually swings back into 'boom' (which it will). The impact of super cheap Chinese manufacturing is already having a massive effect on GDP and that isn't going to alter. India is also booming and both are consuming massive amounts of oil (hence the price rise).

I disagree, it's been widely reported that harvests have failled.

Wheat prices have been rising rapidly because of increased demand from developing economies and because of pressure on farmers to switch to biofuel crops. There is a global shortage of hard red spring wheat, a variety used in bread that has doubled in price since last September. Supply has been damaged by two years of drought in Australia, a frozen American midwest and poor harvests in Ukraine. The rice "shortage" is for very different reasons
The price of rice around the world has risen by as much as 70% in the past year, as global demand has outstripped supply. BBC World Service - News - Global rice shortage

Novice, we haven't seen the shortage on rice. I have heard so many people saying it, but we just haven't had it here. I actually stocked up on the flavored rices last week. They had them on sale 15 for $10.00. I was happy.

Bread has gone up around here though. I have started buying the store brand. I like going to Walmart for groceries now, I seem to get more for my buck.

Our local Walmart has also started allowing local farmers to bring in fruits and veggies to sale, at a reduced rate. That seems to help right much too.

The weekend after I received my driver's license, ten dollars paid for a half tank of gas, several games of pool at the arcade, and a meal from McD's.

It's $3.99 here in my part of eastern Carolina. It just went down from $4.10 to $3.99. I do know of a little hole in the wall place that sales it for $3.95 though.
