Russia waited until now because:
A. They know the UN will only pass sanctions and use really strong words.
B. They know the EU are a bunch of pussies and won't do a thing.
C. They know the political climate in the US, the coming election, and the fact that many Americans are tired of the Iraq war- and won't have the stomach to get involved in another conflict.
Sorry, but Russia has the world in Check Mate. Short of a major response by the United States, Russia will forcefully reunite the old empire.
This has extremely disastrous possibilities and outcomes.
God help those poor Georgians.
