Have any of you seen Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women? It's quite interesting

I believe the phrase is "has too much free time" but yeah...I am awesome!! lol

Just emailed the Oprah show with the link too. I did it under show ideas with the idea of getting corporations who use underaged models and sex to sell their product on the show to justify why they do it.

Sounds like the sort of thing that would get her wound up.

*dabs eyes* You gotta stop making me like you so much.

Thanks, twitchy! I'll have to give that a look Friday, cuz I'm about to leave soon, and I just KNOW it's gonna get me all riled up.

Jean Kilbourne is fantastic, she kind of gives the same lecture over and over again, but it's a relevant lecture and very interesting (she does a body image one that has a lot of the advertising principles mixed in). She's kind of a staple in women's studies curriculum, I've seen Killing Us Softly 3 at least 4 or 5 times now in different classes.

Boys tend to think she's reading into stuff too deep, and some women do too, but a lot of it does make a whole lot of sense.

I watched this entire thing and have gone from passive to livid. Where has my mind been? Why have I not connected these dots?
What a complete and total outrage. Where are the global outcries against this insidious constant drumbeat against women? They are as passive as I once was-this needs to be presented to every girl as soon as possible because I-who pride myself on keeping up with everything -missed it. I suspect most women do. Probably because we have seen it since birth. Twitchy, thank you. WickedHo-count on me to be supportive and writng that nasty company right away. Those of you who have daughters-watch this, please.Anyone with a daughter, sister, wife or Mother-you too have a dog in this fight. Let's just get with this program!
I didn't start out to collect diamonds, but somehow they just kept piling up.-Mae West

OH geez! I'm on the anti-American Apparel bandwagon now. I hadn't seen those Genny pictures before but they look like borderline kiddie porn, soooooooo disturbing. Okay, I'm emailing Oprah too. This is just plain creepy.
Baby, by the time you have kids and they're in school, no one will care about you.

I sent an email also I think you should send this whole thread to Oprah it's disgusting that this man can exploit women like this and nothing be done about it. I say women loosely these look like very young girls to me.
Silly bitches, twitchy links are NOT for kids!-Mel

Here's what I wrote to them:

"After viewing some of the photos on your site, particularly the ones of Genny, I am wondering what exactly you're selling here. I was looking for the button that takes me to the page to arrange a "date" with Genny, but found none. Am I mistaken in believing you are selling a lot more than clothes?
Your company and your advertising strategy is particularly disgusting in an already morally bankrupt world. your photos are sending the message to young girls that it is ok to behave in this provocative manner. If your site had a warning about it's content then MAYBE this would be different. However, you models look very young and are really no different in my mind than simulated child pornography (of course I don't know their ages, in some cases it may be actual child pornography). We don't need any more of our population ending up on "Jerry Springer", evidently you disagree.

I intend on telling as many people as possible about your shameless marketing. If your company must resort to these outrageous types of photos to sell clothing, your product must be as shabby as your conscience."

I never got a response from American Apparel other than their automated one.

Oprah hasn't emailed me either but I forgive her....she has all that working out to do.
