America could lean many lessons from 'Old Europe'.. primarily, how to STOP being arrogant and come back down to earth.

I love Sputnik and Carlo. That it what I have said forever. First French-Canadians are NOT NOT French. The French have practically no regard for them. DeGaulle was before I was even born, let it the fuck go. You are Canadians who speak a French that even France doesn't speak anymore.

As to the French and being cowards, Sputnik hit the nail on the head. Until America has a war on their soil, (and no 9-11 doesn't count) and has lost millions in said wars, then they can tell France they are cowards. They have had enough. You notice the English people did not want to get involved in Iraq just their government.

In my opinion the Seperatists should have been charged with treason for soliciting our CANADIAN military. These bastards are again trying to get the movement going. They actually think that all the military bases, and equipment should stay with them. They are also thinking that they can keep everything we as Canadians gave them, that we will forget about their portion of the debt, and that all will be forgiven. Well if those bastards think they should seperate, let them go, last time the First Nation Indians in Northern Quebec made it very clear that they were Canadian, and they will stay Canadian.
    *********
I am a former Albertan --- if there is such a thing but I was born there and lived there more than half my life -- and I do not share your opinions about Quebecois separatists AT ALL. I do not agree with separation, and neither do the majority of Quebeckers as the referendum showed. I also don't like the "gimmee" attitude displayed by SOME separatists. I lived in Montreal for five years and I gained an appreciation of some of the injustices that have been done to French Canadians in their own country over the years.

That said, most people just want to get on with their lives. Politicians like to play games and stir up trouble and let's face it, ALL of them send their kids to English private schools because knowing only French in North America is a recipe for economic disaster. But that doesn't mean to say that the rest of Canada shouldn't learn another language or be more accepting of Canadians, including French Canadians, who are different from them. Spouting this kind of nonsense -- "They are also thinking that they can keep everything we as Canadians gave them" –– they are Canadians, too, remember? really doesn't help matters any.

Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest.

You have a definite point, but the French have had a cowardly reputation in the US since WWII, so the Iraq thing just validated what a lot of Americans thought anyway. If I may be allowed to generalize so broadly, we Americans feel like the French don't like us anyway, and feel superior & smug toward us, so a seemingly patriotic & justified reason to jab them was a weird bonding experience for a lot of folks.

I studied French for 5 years, and never felt encouraged to speak it. Native French professors pretty much told us that we would never speak it well enough, and we would always sound like nails on a chalkboard to the French. At one point, I realized what an idiot I was for spending so much time on that language. I learned Italian by immersion in 6 months, and the difference in the experience was astounding. The native instructors were so pleased with our efforts & were so enthusiastic & encouraging. That was just my experience.

About the English government, not the people, wanting the war, well, to a large degree that applies here as well. I could count on one hand the number of people I know who support this war. I hate it, and I think it's immoral & horribly arrogant of us to try to *fix* other countries when nobody asked for our fucking advice anyway, and it breaks my heart that so many young people are dying because of this wretched president. Anyway, that's a different topic.

Remember Europe had not recovered from WW1 especially France and was in no position to fight Germany. I agree they are fanatical about their language, Americans are not, we love an accent. However, as to the arrogant, smug superior attitude, sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

There's something of a difference.. France: arrogant with 1000 years of culture, art, music and cuisine

America: roughly 100 years of media inspired culture, cuisine, art.

Well, you know that some people theorize that we despise in others what we see in ourselves....

What a shame. It was stupid from these teachers to tell you this. I'm glad nobody discouraged me like that when I was learning English. But I was lucky to meet some English friends who told me not to bother about my accent and keep on trying. It made me really improve.

France simply cannot stand that it is declining in status and has been for the last century. French was THE language of the world 150 years ago, but not anymore. Are the Chinese trying to get ahead by learning French or English?...it is just sour grapes on the part of the French. and look at the last century or so..asses kicked by the Germans in the Franco-Prussian war, asses having to be saved from the Germans in WW1 and two, asses kicked out of Egypt/suez canal 1956, out of Western Africa and Algeria, asses kicked in vietnam in the 50's...France is just a shell of it's former self and can't stand it..at least the Brits have taken a back seat with a bit more class..time will tell with americans and the Chinese(when the chinese inevitably surpass us). At least these countries have had a time in the sun..unlike other places..*cough cough canada cough cough*

OK so I wrote this the other the day ^^

But having just got back from Nice, France I have changed my opinion slightly. Although I know you can't tar them all with the same brush, some may be nice, polite people (although I have yet to meet one) but my overall view of the French is that they were rude. The only time they were nice - after they had realised we were English, was when we were paying them for something (and sometimes not even then!)

The first night we got there we were queueing up at a snack-stop type thing and when my bf spoke to ask for our order, the whole queue turned and looked at us and started laughing and pointing and talking to each other. It was so obvious that it was because we were English because they hadn't batted an eyelid before he'd spoke.

I definitely think that the French have a bigger problem with English than we do with them. Oh and I also think that most of them are boring and miserable people. They try to be so sophisticated and mature, so they look at you like shit if you dare to order a vodka earlier than 9 o'clock and wear a vest top in the winter - hello I'm from England this weather is HOT to me!!

The only nice person we came across was the man in the hotel, he was extremely helpful and very well mannered, but then we found out he was originally from Bolton in Engand!!
