Who's Karla Homolka?

On another website i frequent, the Canadians are up in arms over a female serial killer released and allowed to do whatever she wants. Do you have any info? Why/how could the Canadian government allow this?!

Karla Homolka, killed 3 girls (including her own sister) with her then lover Paul Bernardo. The Ken & Barbie Killers.

Basically, she claimed some kind of battered wife syndrome thing led her to help him kill the girls, she got 12 years and he got life or whatnot. She served her 12 years having uttered not one word of remorse, and is now out of jail.

They wanted to limit her movements (like being on parole) but some idiot decided that she wasn't a danger (even though the psychologists say she is) but since she served her time and debt to society, she should be as free as anybody.

Nevermind that she's been having a correspondence relationship with another psycho nutjob who killed people, and seems enamoured with him.. nooooo, not a danger at all...

Karla Homolka, ex-wife of Paul Bernardo. An Ontario judge slapped a lot of restrictions on her behavior that weren't exactly legit, but served to please the crowds still clamouring for blood in the province where the crimes occurred. The province made a bad deal with her, but that doesn't mean they can keep hassling her forever.

Now a judge in another province, Quebec, has lifted those restrictions because they have no basis in law. Once someone has served their sentence, however heinous that person may be, they are free to go back into society. End of story.

But most people obviously don't realize that.

I've followed that case and story for a long time since crime facinates me. But for the life of me I could not figure out why the prison system would allow her to communicate with another felon. In the USA correspondence between people in prisons is verboten for very good reason.

But she's served her time. If she's as manipulated and innocent as she claims then she'll not reoffend but if she's not we'll know soon enough. The blame for her getting out so quickly lays at the feet of the state/crown (I forget which it is in Canada) for making that deal that allowed her out in 12 years in exchange for her testimony.

This Karla person and the whole ordeal really freak me out. It got me thinking if I was ever walking on the street all by myself, would I somehow get abducted and molested and tortured and killed?
Will I even be able to defend myself?

Funny story: during the proceedings, she was released on bail,
but of course the cops put her under surveillance round the clock.
(She probably suspected.) The cops followed her to a bar, where,
being a physically attractive blonde, she gets some guy's attention.

They chat. Sure enough, he goes home with her.

The cops follow and wait.

A few hours later, the guy comes sauntering out, pleased as pie
and the two detectives step forward and identify themselves.

"Do you realize you just slept with a woman who's accused of
murdering three people?"

The CourtTV website is pretty sensational, IMO. Not much real depth there, and lots of speculation.

She's a sick fuck. She supposedly held a drugged hanky-type thing over her OWN SISTER'S mouth while Paul Bernardo raped her...

I read an interview and she claimed the relationship with her parents was good. And the interviewer said, even though your own sister died? And she still claimed yes. Somehow, I doubt that's true...

I read true crime books ALL the time and have since I was a teen (I'm 38 now). The only book that ever truly moved me to the point where I didn't think I could read it was one on Karla and her husband Paul Bernardo. After she served up her sister to him as an Xmas gift (she drugged her with a vet drug from where she worked and as a result she choked on her own vomit and died) he kidnapped 2 young girls (at separate times). Karla knew these girls were in the basement. When he grabbed the first one (he was alone) he came home and woke her up to tell her. He even had his or her parents (can't recall now) over for a holiday meal while one of the girls was in the basement! He carried on life as usual.

He videotaped all the things he did to them - besides rape he pulled out their fingernails with pliers and such...really beyond comprehension. The real odd part was he was an attractive guy who no one had a clue what was going on. It was discovered he was also The Scarbourogh Rapist (Scarbourough is a town in Ontario), so he progressed to the kidnapping and murder. The first girl didn't make curfew so her parents locked her out of the house to teach her a lesson...he stumbled upon her. The second was on her way home from school and he had Karla with him in the car. They asked the girl, Kristen French, for directions and grabbed her.

I don't think he kept either for more than a week or so. I think he cut both of them up in his basement and got rid of the bodyparts in the river (encasing one in cement). Anyway, I'm not sure how much Karla really wanted this to happen. There is no doubt Paul abused her, but I can't get over the fact that after her sister's death he wanted her to dress up in the girl's clothes and pretend to be the dead sister when they had sex!!! She did. I get the abused woman syndrome, but this is inexcusable.

In the end she only turned him in to save her own ass. (The cops missed the video tapes when they searched the house but I believe she told her lawyer and he held on to them to use in a plea bargin for her. The tapes completely incriminated Bernardo, of course. Also sad to mention that he used the tape of the first girl, Leslie, to intimidate Kristen in to doing what he wanted.) Interesting, we here in Canada literally never hear anything about Paul. Guess maybe that's cuz he'll never get out. He is one sick fuck and like I said above it's like the Ted Bundy murders in that he looked like your typical 20 something guy, attractive, lots of friends, etc... He wasn't like a greasy looking, loner who you look at and cringe.

I'm sure this is on in the CourtTV report...sorry if I went on and on...

I just wanted to add a few corrections to the story about Karla and Paul above. Paul didn't stumble across Leslie Mahaffy. Paul stalked all of his victims, from the Scarborough rapes to Leslie and Kristen French. He approached Leslie while she was sitting in her backyard and she asked him for a smoke and he said that they were in his car. She followed him to his car and sat inside with the door open and her legs outside of the car and he hit her on the head and took off with her. Leslie wasn't locked out of her house to teach her a lesson. Her house key was taken away long before that night due to her not making her curfew but her parents had meant to make another key for her but had forgotten.
Neither of the girls fingernails were pulled off and he only cut up the body of Leslie Mahaffy and encased all pieces in cement blocks. Kristen was completely intact, only her hair was cut short.
Neither his parents or her parents were over for a holiday dinner, though a dinner at Karla's parents house was the reason for killing Kristen when they did. Paul wanted to keep Kristen alive longer but they both decided that they couldn't leave her in the house alone.
Karla Homolka participated just as much as Paul did in the rapes and murders of her sister, Tammy, Leslie and Kristen. Karla raped her sister as well, although she didn't really want to. She had no problem raping the other two girls. The tapes prove it, showing her enjoying and directing the girls.
Paul's lawyer was the one who found the tapes in Karla's and Paul's house after Paul told him where they were hidden and kept them quiet because he didn't want to incriminate his client more than he already was just to make things worse for Karla. His job was to defend his client. He handed over the tapes after Karla's plea bargain, to another lawyer and stepped down as Paul's lawyer because he was now witness.
