Schools told to dump Churchill and Hitler from history lessons

    Wartime hero: Winston Churchill

Secondary schools will strip back the traditional curriculum in favour of lessons on debt management, the environment and healthy eating, ministers revealed.

Even Winston Churchill no longer merits a mention after a drastic slimming-down of the syllabus to create more space for "modern" issues.
Along with Hitler, Gandhi, Stalin and Martin Luther King, the former prime minister has been dropped from a list of key figures to be mentioned in history teaching.
This means pupils may no longer hear about his stirring speeches during the Second World War, when he told Parliament that defeating Hitler would be Britain's "finest hour".
The only individuals now named in guidance accompanying the curriculum are anti-slavery campaigners Olaudah Equiano and William Wilberforce.
The omission of Churchill added to a growing row over Labour reforms to secondary education - the most radical since the national curriculum was introduced in 1988.
Critics warned traditional subject disciplines were being stripped of key content and used to promote fashionable causes and poorly-defined "life skills".
They said that while the two World Wars remain on the curriculum as broad topics the failure to specify teaching on Churchill - while naming other individuals - downgraded his importance.
The move was called "madness" by his grandson Nicholas Soames, the Tory MP.
"It is absurd. I expect he wasn't New Labour enough for them," he said.
Tory spokesman on children Michael Gove added: "Winston Churchill is the towering figure of twentieth century British history.
    • "His fight against fascism was Britain's finest hour. Our national story can't be told without Churchill at the centre."

Schools are also being told to tear up the timetable of eight lessons a day and introduce classes lasting a few minutes - or several hours - by mixing different subjects together.
Five-minute lessons on spelling, French or German could be "drip-fed" throughout the day.
The architect of the new curriculum, Dr Ken Boston, insisted traditional approaches had been "exhausted".
The slimline regime is being introduced amid concerns that teachers do not have enough time to ensure youngsters master the three Rs.

Key subjects such as history and science will be cut back to allow teachers to spend a quarter of the day helping pupils who struggle with literacy and numeracy.
At the same time, staff will be expected to introduce topics such as personal finance and Urdu aimed at preparing youngsters for life in the 21st century.
The new curriculum - introduced from September next year - precedes the introduction of "functional skills" tests in English and maths.
These are intended to counter criticism that 16-year-olds can score high grades at GCSE without mastering the three Rs.
The news follows a report from the think-tank Civitas warning that subjects are being hijacked by politicians to promote pet causes.
Deputy director Robert Whelan said: "It is almost as if the Government has taken the damaging trends highlighted in our report and ratcheted them up a notch."
However Schools Minister Lord Adonis said that even if Churchill was no longer named in the curriculum, his contribution to British life would still be covered.
"Nobody with any sense could believe that we could teach the Second World War - a statutory requirement - without covering Winston Churchill and Hitler," he added.
Lotteries to allocate school places could be extended across the country after an official adjudicator backed a pioneering scheme in Brighton.
Canon Richard Lindley ruled that ballots were a "reasonable means" of awarding places at over-subscribed schools. They could now replace selection by catchment area, which is said to favour middle-class families able to afford homes near good schools.

After having Lord Brit and some of his cronies condescend to me about the state of American education, I can't wait to throw this at them. This is ridiculous!!

Because forgetting about history makes you not repeat it.

WTF!! These were some of the most important historical figures of the last century. How could students not learn about them.

This is just odd! We learn about him here in the states! They still teach it. My daughter just finished World History and had to do a paper on him and how he was crucial to winning the war.

Just really odd and strange that Britain would nix him!

And interestingly, though perhaps not surprisingly, Tony Blair who was a LABOUR (socialist) PM didn't send his own kids to their local shitty comprehensive.

    Oh no, they went private.

If the schools aren't good enough for his kids, they shouldn't be good enough for ours.

Although, putting myself in his shoes, if I had the money and had kids I'd probably want to get the best I could for them too.

But that's not really the point.

This sort of reminds me of those right-wing Christian idiots, like Bush, who don't think we should teach science or evolution in school. How can you try to omit crucial parts of history as if they don't matter? Especially when it comes to World Wars and the Holocaust? Now I see why some people want to home-school their kids.

Okay, everybody dig out their old copies of 1984, by George Orwell, reread it, remember what his job was? If you haven't read it, then get it and read it.

Well the educational standards of the british reporter is indicative of the relative quality.

The defeat of fascism was not the context of the 'finest hour' speech.

It was the stand against the possible invasion in 1940. Its audience was the british people not the parliament.

That aside how you can leave WW2 on the menu without Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt and Mussolini ( In that order of importance ) is a bit of a mystery.

Brits aren't that well educated overall anyway. Only way to get through to the majority is talk football.

    British History 2008

Kick Off in round 1 of the World War.
Germany-Austria with a sweeping wing attack make early gains but no goal.
Britain-France consolidate in the middle and the game bogs down and looks like ending nil all.

But a late substitution of the US player gives the allies it second wind and as the full time whistle blows its looking like nil all but Germany concedes the game rather than face the penalty shootout.

and so on to round 2. Axis team once again open spectacularly, fast play and supperior ball skills sees the french players taken out of the game 1- 0 germany. The games dominated by the germans in the british half but germany juts cant find the net due to a spirited british defence. Bizarrely Germany splits off half its team to start a second match against the russians.

The germans look good to start clearly outclassing the russians but the weather sets in and the understrength side just cant match the weight of russian players on the field.
meanwhile the US jumps into the game and the german manager is overwhelmed. Britain gets the ball in the el alamein corner - they shoot they score!! wait its on again on the russian game Zhukov gets the ball on the stalingrad line - he shoots he scores its 2-1 the allies. The russians take the game back into the german half - so do the allies - oh look the french players are back in playing in the backs but the forwards dominate the game now. As the whistle blows the german manager leaves the field.

Oh but look the allies are arguing over the trophy now - this one will take a while I think.

I've run across several post-secondary students over the years who've never heard of Winston Churchill. They're usually the ones disrupting the class, proud that they don't (can't) read, and insisting that they already know everything they need to know. I call it the triumph of mediocrity. It's nice to know the British educational system is jumping on this race to the bottom, too.

This is funny. In my country every decade they add more and more shit to our educational programs. It is quite annoying that kids around the world get to the same professions with less studying than we do. Oh well, sorry if I come off as an arrogant bitch, just annoyed :I

Anyway, the kids before could study Churchill and Hitler the same time as the other stuff. I'm sure the kids today can as well. I hate it how the modern world makes everything too easy for the kids (and yes, I also hate it when it's going too far).
