Default Texas to be the first state to demand HPV vaccine

I am angry about this.. I learned on the news last night that our sorry governor Rick Perry took money from Merck the people who make the vaccine for his campaign.. So did lots of others who just won re-election.. This country was founded on our personal rights, and all these damn Repubs want to do is take away our rights..

A BBC show, Justice John Deed, just did a series on this kind of thing. It's corrupt to the core. Lots of vaccines have dangerous side effects, yet you'll never hear Big Pharma admit to that. Vaccines are useful to many, but to make it mandatory for all to have them is ludicrous.

A lot of US and British soldiers were given bad vaccines, are suffering terrible chronic side effects, and are getting no help at all from either government. Scary and sad.

Government should not be in bed with big business -- it rarely serves the public good, but it sure as hell makes corporations richer.

It is scary.. I have a new baby girl, so I have to take her and she is made to take this damn vaccine, without all the known possible problems it could cause?? ANd to require it in Middle School? I am pissed, I cannot believe the state of our country..

Conflict of interest seems to be business as usual these days. It's been pretty well documented that problems can occur and that people and animals don't need constant vaccinations. I had vets telling me for years that my cats needed vaccinations annually, but in reality, after two vaccinations -- the first, and the boosters -- they still had enough antibodies in their blood six years later. It's all a cash grab by Big Pharma and the sleazebag pols who suck up after them.

^^ Conflict of interest is what I donot understand.. Lawyers, Judges all have this, why is it not a conflict of interest?? Perry took money from them so he should not be able to rule on this....

Well, the Repugs don't think conflict of interest applies to them.

By LIZ AUSTIN PETERSON ABC News: Online news, breaking news, feature stories and more

AUSTIN, Texas Feb 21, 2007 (AP)— Gov. Rick Perry's chief of staff met with key aides about a new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer on the same day its manufacturer donated money to his campaign, documents obtained by The Associated Press show.
Texas became the first state to require the vaccine against human papillomavirus earlier this month when Perry issued an executive order requiring it for girls entering sixth grade. Lawmakers are considering overriding the measure.
A calendar for chief of staff Deirdre Delisi obtained under Texas' open records laws shows she met with the governor's budget director and three members of his office for an "HPV Vaccine for Children Briefing" on Oct. 16. That same day, Merck & Co.'s political action committee donated $5,000 to Perry and a total of $5,000 to eight state lawmakers.
Perry spokesman Robert Black said the timing of the meeting and the donation was a coincidence. "There was no discussion of any kind of mandates," Black said.
The documents obtained Wednesday by The AP provide new detail about the relationship between the governor's office and Merck, which makes the only HPV vaccine on the market.
Perry's mandate has inflamed conservatives, who say it contradicts Texas' abstinence-only sexual education policies and intrudes too far into families' lives. Though there is a provision in state law that allows parents to opt out of the vaccine, opponents say the shots are too new and too costly to force on young girls.
Merck had waged a behind-the-scenes lobbying campaign to get state legislatures to require 11- and 12-year-old girls to get the three-dose vaccine against the virus that can cause cervical cancer as a requirement for school attendance. But it announced Tuesday it was suspending those efforts after its motives were questioned. The New Jersey company stands to make billions if Gardasil is required nationwide.
Critics had previously questioned Perry's ties to the company. Mike Toomey, Perry's former chief of staff and Delisi's predecessor, lobbies for Merck. And the governor accepted a total of $6,000 from Merck during his re-election campaign, including $1,000 in December 2005.

My daughter will be first in line for this vaccine.
I watched my aunt die of cervical cancer, I will be damned if I watch my daughter.

we are talking about cancer-so anything that can prevent it is a good thing.

^^That was my first reaction, too, but I understand that they are upset because it seems that the politician is being bought by Merk.

I hope that this vaccination is made available through the state health departments so that every one can afford to have it. Hopefully it will save the lives of thousands of women.

Kids are already required to be vaccinated for various diseases so not sure why another one would hurt, especially if it can prevent a type of cancer.

This debate was floating around some six months ago in the news, can't remember which state it was. I do remember it was a bi-partisan group backing it. A bunch of pubes were saying it teaches young children about sex and will send the wrong message.

Great a bunch of 13 year old girls are going to be guinea pigs, because a dumb ass politician, a man to boot is greedy. I hope to god for these girls sake who are getting this forced on them don’t develop serious side effects. I know if I had a daughter I wouldn’t want her to be one of the first to try it.
