OTTAWA — Love thy politician.

It's better to pray for elected lawmakers than to berate them, say the organizers of a demonstration Saturday that drew thousands of Christians to Parliament Hill.

They came from across Canada to pray for a reconsideration of gay marriage, a Liberal private member's bill that would outlaw abortion after 20 weeks of gestation, and Conservative efforts to raise the age of sexual consent to 16 from 14.

The Bible instructs believers to honour and pray for those in authority, said organizer Christina Groot, 26, of Vancouver.

"We're not pointing the finger at our politicians," she said in an interview. "We really honour them as our leaders, and I think that's a rare thing for them."

The daylong prayer session was part of a growing movement to ``see morality restored in Canada," said Faytene Kryskow, 31, another organizer.

Through a blaring sound system, she rallied a police-estimated throng of about 5,000 faithful.

"In the name of Jesus, we take back our sexual purity!" she exclaimed to a chorus of "Amen!" and "Thank you, Jesus!"

The demonstrators, many with arms stretched skyward, shimmered in humid heat that reached the mid-30s.

Curious tourists looked on as prayers were interspersed with gospel music and dancing.

The event was financed by the independent, non-partisan group 4 My Canada, whose members are overwhelmingly young and Christian, Groot said.

"It's pretty well-known that between the ages of 18 and 35, we're the least engaged citizens in Canada," she said. "We don't vote, we don't speak up."

"We realized that our voice, the socio-conservative voice, was being raised by our parents and older groups but not really by us.

"We realized that we needed to take responsibility for that."

Conservative MP Jeff Watson, who is also a Christian, was one of the only politicians to attend.

The Essex, Ont., MP said it was gratifying to have constituents acknowledge that politics is a tough and often thankless job.

"It's quite a refreshing change," Watson said. "Any support we can get is great."

Jen Jewett, 20, of Saint John, N.B., said she is still forming opinions on many political issues, such as same-sex marriage.

"A lot of my friends are gay," she said.

The nanny and aspiring photographer said she wanted to take part in the mass prayer to help guide MPs.

"Instead of bombarding them, attacking them, we say we recognize that they're doing the best they can," she said.

Admittedly, they sound vastly more sane than the yahoos south of the border, but it's the same message, the same mentality and the same "control other peoples private lives!" crap.

Looks like they are trying to remake Canada into USA North. Of course to really do that it would have to outlaw abortion altogether..take away ALL gay rights and the age of consent would be at the age when the person gets married! lol
