Boy or girl, the first child of the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William will be able to assume the throne as historic changes to the rule of succession have gotten the green light.

The leaders of the 16 governments with Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state have unanimously agreed to change the laws in their realms.

Under current laws, the immediate heir is the first-born son of the monarch.

Announcing the new deal, British Prime Minister David Cameron said, "Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our queen."

The countries Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Papua New Guinea, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Tuvalu, Barbados, Grenada, Solomon Islands, St. Lucia and the Bahamas will now work to implement the changes individually.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said it was a "matter for government," and denied that the Queen signaled her blessing in a speech at the conference of the heads of government in the Commonwealth, in Perth, Australia.

The theme of this year's conference is "Women as Agents of Change." Said Her Majesty: "It reminds us of the potential in our societies that is yet to be fully unlocked, and it encourages us to find ways to allow girls and women to play their full part."

Oh, thank goodness! Now women can become pointless, anachronistic figureheads.

Whatever. The monarchy is an archaic institution that is only being maintained for the sake of tradition. You can just as well abolish it as change it.

Finally! The Scandinavian royal families implemented this ages ago.

Now they can change the heir and the spare thing for an heiress and a spare-ess!

Just a point. It wasn't the monarchy but the law that was sexist. The monarchy is subject to the laws of state too.

They can also be catholic successors too now. I see People Magazine forgot that bit.

So it is grandfathered to Charles? So Anne can forget being queen? So the line would go William and Kate's kids then Harry?

I don't know what that means but Charles is older than Anne, so the line goes through him and his children (who both happen to be boys) and then William's future children. Not sure what would happen if the whole of Charles' line was wiped out whether Anne then moves ahead of Andrew.

I doubt Anne would want it.

You know that she refused to give her kids titles right? Zara Phillips (who got married recently) is her daughter.

Yeah, I doubt Princess Anne would want it so it would go to Prince Andrew and then, God help us, Beatrice. Let's hope Wazza and Kazza have lotsa kiddies so the succession will be secure. If Kate Cambridge wants babies she needs to stop starving herself and start breeding. It's still her #1 priority no matter what the gender of the baby. Most royal brides in the 'firing line' have been preggo by now and she's nearly 30.
