Default Gay Diplomat Fears He'll be Murdered if He Returns Home To Saudi Arabia

A Saudi diplomat in Los Angeles has reportedly asked for political asylum in the United States, claiming his life is in danger if he is made to return to Saudi Arabia.

The diplomat, which NBC identified as Ali Ahmad Asseri, the first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, reportedly told U.S. federal officials that Saudi officials refused to renew his diplomatic passport and terminated his job after they discovered that he was gay and was close friends with a Jewish woman.

'My life is in a great danger here and if I go back to Saudi Arabia, they will kill me openly in broad daylight,' Asseri told NBC in an email message.

Asseri posted a letter on a Saudi website criticizing his country's 'backwardness' as well as the role of 'militant imams' that have 'defaced the tolerance of Islam,' NBC said.

In the letter Asseri also threatened to make public embarrassing information on members of the Saudi royal family living in the United States, NBC said.

Homosexuality is considered 'immoral' in Saudi Arabia and treated as a serious crime.

Earlier this year, a twenty-seven year old Saudi man was charged with homosexuality and impersonating a police officer when he posted a comical video of himself on-line, where he discussed popular culture, shows off his chest hair and flirts with the camera man.

He was sentenced to a year in prison, with 1,000 lashes, and ordered to pay a fine of 5,000 rials (US $1,333).

The last Saudi diplomat to seek asylum in the United States was Mohammed al-Khilewi, an official with the country's United Nations delegation, who sought protection in 1994 after publicly criticizing Saudi Arabia's human rights record and what he said was its support for terrorism.

NBC added that Asseri was questioned by the Department of Homeland Security after he applied for asylum.

The department declined to comment on Mr Asseri's case, while a call to the diplomat's lawyer was not returned on Saturday.
