Default Lars Vilks, Muhammad Cartoonist, Attacked During Lecture

STOCKHOLM -- A Swedish artist who angered Muslims by depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog was assaulted Tuesday as furious protesters interrupted his university lecture about the limits of free speech.

Lars Vilks told The Associated Press a man leaped from the front row and head-butted him as he was delivering his lecture at Uppsala University, breaking Vilks' glasses but leaving him uninjured.

Police later said the attacker was stopped before he could reach Vilks and that the artist may have bumped into plain-clothes officers who briskly evacuated him from the room. Three people were detained, but it wasn't immediately clear whether the attacker was among them.

A video clip of the incident by a Swedish newspaper showed police using pepper spray and batons to hold off an angry crowd shouting "God is great" in Arabic after Vilks was escorted out of the lecture hall.

Vilks has faced numerous threats over his controversial drawing of Muhammad with a dog's body, but Tuesday's incident was the first physical assault directed against him.

Earlier this year U.S. investigators said Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison. She has pleaded not guilty.

Vilks said a group of about 15 people had been shouting and trying to interrupt the lecture before the incident at the university in Uppsala, about 40 miles (70 kilometers) north of Stockholm.

Some of them stormed toward the front of the room after the attack and clashed with security guards as Vilks was pulled away into a separate room, he said, describing the scene as "complete chaos."

"A man ran up and threw himself over me. I was head-butted and my glasses were broken," Vilks said before hanging up for questioning by police.

Uppsala police spokesman Jonas Eronen later said that the attacker was stopped by officers before he could get to Vilks. The physical contact Vilks described probably happened when police in civilian clothes evacuated the artist "in a brusque manner," Eronen said.

A man and a woman were detained on suspicion of violence against police while another man was held for disturbing public order, he said. All were just under 20 years old.

Uppsala University spokeswoman Pernilla Bjork said Vilks was showing an excerpt from a film by an Iranian artist about Islam and homosexuality that had been banned from YouTube when the commotion started.

"It was about when Muslims and Muhammad are represented in homosexual situations," said Anders Montelius, a 23-year-old student who attended the lecture.

"Some people started shouting, things happened really fast. About 10-15 seconds later it erupts. A guy from the front row gets up and sets upon Vilks. Several others followed this man. There was commotion and police pepper-sprayed a couple of people," Montelius told AP.

"When the university person responsible for the lecture announced that the lecture was discontinued, there were cheers and chants in Arabic," he said.

The video posted on the Web site of newspaper Uppsala Nya Tidning showed agitated police officers clashing with protesters at the front of the lecture hall. A female police officer uses pepper spray to subdue a young man. Another youngster is wrestled to the ground.

University officials said there had been a peaceful demonstration by Muslims outside the university before Vilks started to speak, and that about 260 people attended his lecture. Bjork said the university had been in contact with police and security guards before Vilks' lecture to ensure his safety.

"We think it is our task as a university to be able discuss difficult issues," she said. "We think it is very unfortunate that this has resulted in violence."

Vilks made his rough sketch more than a year after 12 Danish newspaper cartoons of the prophet sparked furious protests in Muslim countries in 2006.

A Swedish newspaper printed the drawing, leading to further protests, and revived a heated debate in the West and the Muslim world about religious sensitivities and the limits of free speech.

It also led to numerous death threats against Vilks, who was temporarily moved to a secret location after al-Qaida in Iraq put a $100,000 bounty on his head in September 2007.

Default Muhammad cartoonist defiant after attack

STOCKHOLM - A Swedish artist whose drawing of the Prophet Muhammad offended Muslims said Wednesday he hopes to get another chance to deliver a lecture on free speech that was interrupted by violent protests.

But officials at Uppsala University said they doubted they would invite Lars Vilks again after police used pepper spray and batons to help him escape a furious crowd Tuesday.

"It's nothing that we're discussing right now, but it's not very likely given how it turned out here," university spokeswoman Anneli Vaara said.

While Vilks escaped the incident with broken glasses and a bit of a shock, he said it raised concerns about the freedom of expression at Sweden's oldest and most prestigious institute of higher learning.

"What you get is a mob deciding what can be discussed at the university," Vilks told The Associated Press, adding he was ready to repeat the lecture if re-invited.

"I'm ready to go up again," he said. "This must be carried through. You cannot allow it to be stopped."

The 53-year-old artist has faced numerous threats over his 2007 sketch of Muhammad with a dog's body. Earlier this year U.S. investigators said he was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison. She has pleaded not guilty.

Vilks' Web site appeared to have been exposed to a hacker attack on Wednesday. Instead of his regular blog there was a message saying the site had been hacked and with links to information about the Prophet Muhammad.

Witnesses said the violence Tuesday broke out a few minutes into Vilks' lecture about the limits of artistic freedom, when he showed a film by an Iranian artist about Islam and homosexuality. A young man leaped from his front-row seat and tried to attack Vilks, police and the artist said.

Vilks initially believed he was head-butted by the man, but said he later understood he had collided with plainclothes police officers who intercepted the attacker and then briskly evacuated Vilks from the room.

"This was the first time I've experienced a physical assault," Vilks said. "It was a bit of a shock."

A video of the incident showed agitated police officers clashing with protesters at the front of the lecture hall. A female police officer used pepper spray to subdue a young man, and another youngster was wrestled to the ground. Some protesters were shouting "God is great" in Arabic.

Uppsala police spokesman Jonas Eronen said two officers sustained minor injuries.

The attacker was detained on suspicion of attempted assault but was later released, he said. Two others a man and a woman were also released after questioning and could face charges of using violence against police. All suspects were in their late teens, Eronen said.

Vaara, the university spokeswoman, said the lecture had been open to the public and the suspects were not believed to be students, though she added she wasn't sure about that.

The incident was condemned by Swedish newspaper editorials calling it an attack on the freedom of speech, and in more moderate terms by the Scandinavian country's leading politician.

"It shows that there are tensions in this discussion, which I've had to follow for years," Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt told reporters in Stockholm. "I take it very seriously. There is a risk that tensions form between individuals and the Swedish society, which is something we don't want."

Helena Benauouda, the head of Sweden's Muslim Council, an umbrella group for Muslim organizations, declined comment, saying she didn't have enough information about the incident.

Vilks depicted Muhammad more than a year after 12 Danish newspaper cartoons of the prophet sparked furious protests in Muslim countries in 2006. Images of Muhammad, even favorable ones, are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

A Swedish newspaper printed Vilks' drawing, leading to further protests, and revived a heated debate in the West and the Muslim world about religious sensitivities and the limits of free speech.

(It's getting worse, I agree this is ridiculous, but if I were in his shoes or a public figure, I would definitely be afraid for my life if I was perceived to insult the Islamic religion, sucks but that's life)

Home of Swedish Muhammad cartoonist attacked

The home of a Swedish artist who once drew a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad as a dog has been hit by a suspected arson attack, police said Saturday.

Lars Vilks, who lives in Nyhamnslage in southern Sweden, was not at home during the attack late Friday night and no one was reported injured.

It was the latest in a week of attacks on the 53-year-old cartoonist, who was assaulted Tuesday by a man while he lectured at a university and saw his Web site apparently attacked by hacker on Wednesday.

Police were alerted just before noon Saturday, as people passing by the artist's house noted that several windows had been smashed. When officers arrived, they discovered plastic bottles filled with gasoline and fire damage on the surface of the building. Attackers are also suspected of having tried setting the inside of house on fire, but the flames are thought to have fizzled out.

Police have no suspects in the case, police Spokeswoman Sofie Osterheim said.

Vilks, who often jokes about the threats he has received since his 2007 sketch of Muhammad, including from al-Qaida, said the latest attack doesn't raise his fears more than usual.

"I'm not really more afraid than what I think is realistic," he told the Associated Press over the telephone.

Vilks has faced numerous threats over his drawing. Earlier this year, U.S. investigators said Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison. She has pleaded not guilty.

Default Muhammad cartoonist in hiding after arson attack

STOCKHOLM A Swedish artist whose drawing of the Prophet Muhammad with a dogs body angered Muslims said Sunday he doesn't feel safe in his home at night, after a week of attacks against him.

Lars Vilks told The Associated Press he has started sleeping elsewhere since an attempted arson attack Friday against his home in Nyhamnslage, southern Sweden.

Earlier in the week, Vilks was attacked by a man as he gave a lecture at a university in central Sweden, and the following day his Web site appeared to have been targeted by hackers.

Vilks said he has decided to sleep elsewhere as a precaution, but doesn't think there will be another attack against him right now because of increased police patrols.

"During the day I don't think it is dangerous because I can keep watch over myself," Vilks said. "But I have to realize that I can't be there during the night.".

The artist has faced numerous threats over his 2007 sketch. Earlier this year, U.S. investigators said Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American woman who dubbed herself "Jihad Jane," and who now faces life in prison. She has pleaded not guilty.

Swedish police arrested a 21-year-old man late Saturday and a 19-year-old man on Sunday on suspciion of the attempted arson attack. Earlier Saturday, they had found bottles filled with gasoline and minor fire damage to Vilks' home. Several windows at the artist's house had also been smashed. Vilks was not home during the attack.

Vilks drew his picture of Muhammad more than a year after 12 cartoons of the prophet in a Danish newspaper sparked furious protests in Muslim countries. Images of Muhammad, even favorable ones, are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

How do you slander, libel or defame, as it applies to law, an invisible mythical deity?

That only applies to living beings, citizens of nations.

Religion is NOT untouchable, nobody is REQUIRED to respect any particular belief system.

Hell, people from every religion disrespect every other religion by dismissing the god or gods everybody else believes in.

    ... religion is so stupid

Saying religion is stupid or a fairytale I would classify as freedom of speech but drawing someone's religious figure as a dog or with a bomb on his head isnt freedom to disagree, freedom to criticize or freedom of speech. and to my knowledge libel/slander nothing to do with whether the figure being defamed is dead or alive it has to do with whether the said libel/slander is published and for how long. Either way in my eyes this deliberate and malicious targeting of muslims a already marginalized minority is disgusting and nothing to applaud. It seems like any loser is jumping on the bash the burka and muhammed for their 15 seconds of fame. Their actions prove that their intentions are not to start discussion and intelligent debate. It's a shame muslims prolong their 15 secondsby reacting in ways that lead to their being targeted further.

Yes, it is. It's also satire, lampooning, or journalistic criticism. You cannot actionably libel/slander a mythical figure. It would be like slandering fucking Santa Claus.

    Erm, no.

It's not targeting Muslims, it's targeting Allah. Allah will surely sue a bitch if he ever feels insulted. Same with Jesus, or Moses, or Vishnu, or whomever else.

Muhammed is actually not a mythical figure he lived approximately 1427-1430 yrs ago.
    Erm, no.

Defamation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    from your link...
    Slander and libel
The common law origins of defamation lie in the torts of slander (harmful statement in a transitory form, especially speech) and libel[5][6] (harmful statement in a fixed medium, especially writing but also a picture, sign, or electronic broadcast), each of which gives a common law right of action.
"Defamation" is the general term used internationally, and is used in this article where it is not necessary to distinguish between "slander" and "libel". Libel and slander both require publication.[7] The fundamental distinction between libel and slander lies solely in the form in which the defamatory matter is published. If the offending material is published in some fleeting form, as by spoken words or sounds, sign language, gestures and the like, then this is slander. If it is published in more durable form, for example in written words, film, compact disc (CD), DVD, blogging and the like, then it is considered libel." The debate whether Internet blogs or Bulletin Boards are publishers is a key subject being addressed, whereas an Internet based community is more akin to conversations in a bar or pub, with content being written as an ongoing dialogue that is generally not edited or regulated such as in the publishing industry.[
I could not find the living not living thing. Can you clarify?

It's not targeting Muslims, it's targeting Allah. Allah will surely sue a bitch if he ever feels insulted. Same with Jesus, or Moses, or Vishnu, or whomever else.

Yes it is targeting muslims because it is targeting muhammed lol, did they draw allah with a bomb on his head or committing bestialty. It's one thing to argue freedom of speech it's another to say making cartoons of muhammed is not targeting muslims. Who else would it target?
It's a shame they're murderous retards, yes. Maybe one day they'll grow up and join the rest of the planet in acting like adults.
That's rich from a group of people who dont show even a fraction of the anger they get from a percieved threat than when their governments are going around bombing people to smithereens and creating the same murderous retards your going on about. I wish all bombs would smoke before they blew people up.
You cannot say what you want on this forum without being banned neither can you say/do what you want in real life. This isnt freedom of speech in my eyes neither is it adult like.

Historically mythical, like Jesus or Moses. Said to have existed, no actual proof of such except some chicken scratchings on a cave wall 300 years after they died, written by people who weren't alive when said figure was.

Secondly, you cannot defame, slander or libel a historical/mythical figure because they ARE NOT ALIVE, AROUND, OR EXISTING TO TAKE OFFENSE. People being insulted FOR THEM does not count.

Thirdly it targets a mythical figure, Mohammed who is about as real as Jesus, or one of the many avatars of Vishnu. I suppose he could have drawn a picture of Santa Claus but I guess that would have insulted millions of children, who no doubt would react by assaulting or murdering the artist in question?

Fourthly.. a group of people? The Swedes? When is the last time the Swedes bombed anybody, 1700 sometime? Is there another "group of people" you're talking about? Also, a perceived threat? So Lars was not actually assaulted? It was a "perceived" assault? How about the other artist that was MURDERED.. i suppose his death was "perceived" too.

You can say what you please on this forum, unless you attack another poster personally, or exhibit classic racist, homophobic, xenophobic tendencies... you know, bigotry towards aspects of people that they cannot change.

Religion is a choice, people change that all the time. It is not the same as skin color.

Sorry your religion was insulted, but get the fuck over it or convert to another one. Call it a choice.
