Tehran, Iran, Jan. 07 – An Iranian court has sentenced a teenage rape victim to death by hanging after she weepingly confessed that she had unintentionally killed a man who had tried to rape both her and her niece.

The state-run daily Etemaad reported on Saturday that 18-year-old Nazanin confessed to stabbing one of three men who had attacked the pair along with their boyfriends while they were spending some time in a park west of the Iranian capital in March 2005.

Nazanin, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, said that after the three men started to throw stones at them, the two girls’ boyfriends quickly escaped on their motorbikes leaving the pair helpless.

She described how the three men pushed her and her 16-year-old niece Somayeh onto the ground and tried to rape them, and said that she took out a knife from her pocket and stabbed one of the men in the hand.

As the girls tried to escape, the men once again attacked them, and at this point, Nazanin said, she stabbed one of the men in the chest. The teenage girl, however, broke down in tears in court as she explained that she had no intention of killing the man but was merely defending herself and her younger niece from rape, the report said.

The court, however, issued on Tuesday a sentence for Nazanin to be hanged to death.

Last week, a court in the city of Rasht, northern Iran, sentenced Delara Darabi to death by hanging charged with murder when she was 17 years old. Darabi has denied the charges.

In August 2004, Iran’s Islamic penal system sentenced a 16-year-old girl, Atefeh Rajabi, to death after a sham trial, in which she was accused of committing “acts incompatible with chastity”.

The teenage victim had no access to a lawyer at any stage and efforts by her family to retain one were to no avail. Atefeh personally defended herself and told the religious judge that he should punish those who force women into adultery, not the victims. She was eventually hanged in public in the northern town of Neka.

That's so sad. I don't understand all this. How could anybody condone that? I know, I know "different culture" but I still don't see how anybody couldn't see that as unethical.

In my Anthropology class in Uni, we were told you were supposed to leave your own values at the door when evaluation other cultures, but I don't know how anyone could do that in this case. It just seems so inherently wrong, how could it not be?

Unfortunately, in most countries a woman's life does not equal a man's. Poor girl, that's just the way it is. Stabbing the would-be rapist Lorena Bobbit style would have been better

Oh you are taking an anth class!!! I majored in anth at SFU. But I bet UBC is much better, you guys do cultural anth whereas we do social anth (boring...).
It's impossible to be unbiased by your own values, so it's best to be upfront about all your assumptions (good anthropologists/ethnographers usually do that).

I took a Cultural Anthropology class and an Archaeological Anthropology class. I enjoyed the Archaeology class more than the Cultural Anth class, but that was just personal taste. We had Janice Boddy as our prof for Cultural Anth and after doing a little pre-research on all my profs, I was amazing UBC could get such a wellknown and respected prof! She was even mentioned several times in our textbooks! Lol. I did well in the class, but since I'm going to be a Poli Sci major, I don't know that I'll be able to take any more classes.

Are women not worth much there that even their boyfriends will leave them behind at the drop of a hat to fend for themselves? I'm not saying this in a sexist manner that the male has to , no even the other way around, If my boyfriend was about to get attacked by a mob I would not run away.

I can't believe this poor girl is being sentenced to death for murdering her attacker through self defence! She shouldn't be punished at all never mind the death sentence. The people in charge of this joke need to be put to death for being so stupid.

Tenaj I couldn't believe that either. What fucking pussies. Even when we were just dating my husband would have taken them all on himself before he left me. I mean, running away (without me) would probably not have even been a thought that went through his head. Protecting me or any female he was with (or maybe even any male, if he was with a guy friend) would have just been instinctual for him! Maybe it really does have to do with how one is raised, but I always felt that was just a natural male instinct for most men. Even if they are raised and feel women aren't as valuable as men are and thus this makes them more important, what a special breed of cowards they must be raising over there that they would run off and leave a woman or anyone weaker or outnumbered to fend for him/herself.

By the way, that offends my spirituality tremendously...they should stop doing that or we should all protest and hold up signs advocating that these people should be put to death by beheading
