Obama awarded Nobel Peace Prize
(CNN) -- President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
Less than nine months into his presidency, Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."
The committee also said Obama has "created a new climate in international politics."
In his short time in office, Obama has acted on a wide range of issues from the economy to terrorism and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Obama is the fourth U.S. president to receive the award, joining presidents Jimmy Carter, Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt.
This year's peace prize nominees included 172 people and 33 organizations. The committee does not release the names of the nominees

All I can say is WTF? I'm utterly stunned. I'm his biggest fan, but this is ridiculous. It's not like this is viewers' choice. Fucking sycophants in Oslo.
I mean, yes, he moved the masses, but he hasn't achieved jackshit so far. Who knows, he might bomb Iran tomorrow, how about we allow history to HAPPEN first, before we put a lable on it.

Ufortunately, not.
There are people in Africa, Asia, the Middle East who put their lives on the line on a daily basis, trying to make this world a better place. They have done so for decades and no one even knows their fucking names.
Peace workers, development aid workers, journalists, doctors. They are put into jail or shot, but they don't have cute dogs and kids like Obama. They don't make a good magazine cover.
I am so pissed. This is not the fucking MTV award, for crying out loud. I'm so tired of them using this prize to influence current political developments. Oh yes, and Gandhi never won it.
From Alfred Nobel's will: The Nobel Peace Prize shall be awarded...
"...to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

I already yelled to the first Norwegian I found handy (the boyfriend) but unfortunately he's not in the committee
This is disgusting! He hasn't done anything!!!! Oh, wait, he brought together that academic guy and the cop for a beer! That must be it! Though in that case he should have shared it with Biden!

While I do congratulate Obama on the Nobel prize, I do agree that he's not someone who really deserves it. He's the president, not a humanitarian.
But I will enjoy the exploding heads of a few repukes today. *evil cackle*

Although I agree he is certainly NOT a person I would have thought of
winning the prize, I can sort of see where they were coming from in
their motivation: he IS seeking to establish more "harmony" between
nations and people, certainly as opposed to the previous US government
which alienated just about the entire world against the US.
However: he has only uttered this as his plan/wish, and has not made
many concrete efforts, nor has he had ANY results so far.
So, if anything, his nomination and win are grossly premature.

I cant decide if politics is a dirtier business than show business.
Politics affect us all,so those shitheads practicing it should be less provocative..
I would think it is a joke too,but i am old and cynical enough to know better.

^^ Thanks to the committee in Oslo, the lines between showbiz and politics have become even blurrier.

I saw this first thing this morning and seriously thought it was a joke. Neocons are going to have a field day with this one. Especially this part (copied from MSN):
President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
You just know they're going to go off on that "secret Muslim" BS all over again.
I also wanted to say that I feel sorry for Pres. Obama. He can't even enjoy the award because of the backlash. Even his most staunch supporters are saying he doesn't deserve it. He didn't ask for it, but he's going to get tons of criticism.

And the sad part about it is he won't be able to receive one in the future if/when he really does deserve it.

To me, the really dumb part is that the nominations closed just 2 weeks into his presidency. What exactly did he do in those 2 weeks that deserved this? All the out reach, etc was after the nominations closed.

Still,it is quite an honor. He has started more talks between nations. Maybe it is just a relief from dealing with Bush.
