They also used to make actresses stand in trenches to do scenes with short actors.

^haha. I don't think I could keep a straight face!
My dad's 2nd wife was married to a Standard Oil lifer when she was really young, and his father had been a SO lifer as well. He knew Redford's father, also a Standard Oil man, and met Redford before he became a major superstar. Damn were we jealous!

Yes, not even that long ago! Apparently they did that with Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnell in Circle of Friends.

What's wrong with the way his eyelids look now? Why is the surgery considered botched?

Isn't it obvious?
1. They lifted them too much, so that he now - for the first
time in his life - has a big crease/fold in his eyelids
2. They lifted them too much, so that the eyelids are almost
"inside out", the tender, moist inside of the eyelid is too much
exposed
3. His eyes are now, more than before, two different sizes
That's just three things that went wrong.

I'm looking at the top six photos of the opening post and basing my reaction on those - they seemed to be the clearest, most recent, and most consistent (unless I'm misinterpreting), whereas some other pics of him seem to be capturing a bad angle or a moment of an expression that would dramatize the wonk eye inaccurately. Maybe I'm picking the wrong pics?
My reaction seems indicative of how I balance out the good with the liabilities with these procedures, including what the surgeon had to work with to start.
1. That fold doesn't look drastic to me, as I think it's the result of operating on delicate tissue that has lost elasticity with age, especially given the situs of the lids pre-surgery. The payoff is the more wide-eyed look, which for a guy his age, is pretty flattering in my view instead of droop city.
His eyes appeared hooded to me starting very much so after his 50th, but before that and a bit afterward, it was attractive and edgy on him instead of a flaw. If anything, the reshaping of the eye seems to make him more average, which I see not as a bad thing at this point. If this happened in his career earlier when he was younger (before 50), he would have lost sexiness, character and roles; as he aged, that droop was pretty bad and likely a vision impairment - another trade-off.
2. I'm not seeing too much of that part, again based on the six photos where his hair looks uber fake and terrible. Perhaps my view is so construed along the lines I mentioned above that I can't pick up on that.
3. On some pre-existing problems: they'll stay if there is some condition preventing the surgeon from correcting it. Could be a genetic quirk with the placement or deterioration of a nerve, or scar tissue, who knows? When I see a modification through surgery but also see a flaw staying the same, I figure something is going on beyond the control of the surgeon, or that the risks of correction outweighed any payoff through manipulating it. That's how this looks to me since another target problem - droop - has been corrected. I don't see the lack of symmetry getting worse through the surgery. If anything, it seems improved or at least slightly minimized, although it's obvious still.

maybe you like the overly tweaked eyelid look. it looks funny to me, like they pulled them up too much and now he has startled doll eyes.

Exactly. And eyes like that really have very little, if any,
ability for emotional expression anymore. Kinda like doll
eyes or shark's eyes. Let the stare down begin!

I think what makes him look terrible is the toupee and colour of it. Too back about the eye job.

I truly think it's still his real hair. Just a hideous dye job.

I don't know, it looks thicker now than it did in his youth.

Looks like he went to the same surgeon who botched up Michael Douglas. At least Michael went back in for correction... Agree about the hair color. Yuck.
A woman I know literally bumped into him at a theater washroom. He thought he was entering the green room which was further down the hall from the ladies room. She was exiting the ladies room as he was entering and they smacked into each other.
She's 5'9" and was wearing 2" heals and definitely looked DOWN at him. She figures he is 5'7" tops.
He had a good sense of humor about trying to enter the women's washroom and clasped her hands and made a joke out of it before continuing down the hallway with is dozy handlers to the right door.
His feet are only size 8 too. At the Bata shoe museum in Toronto, they have a spotlight that casts the footprints of various celebrities. They have of his cowboy boots projected and you can compare your feet to his and others.

He could pass as a woman now. Men with PS often get so feminine looking.
