Nah, it's a subgenre of metal. The general idea is to be the evilest evil that ever did evil. Black metal lyrics are almost always Satanic, it's an unspoken rule that it's performers are Scandinavian, and most seem to be neo-nazi whatevers. They like to wear huge spikes and inverted crosses and other ghey ghey items.

I don't care for it, mostly because the music consists of:

• Guitars doing mostly tremolo picking. And by mostly, I mean all the fucking time.
• Blasting double bass drums and very random use of cymbals
• Screechy, high pitched rasping growls.
• Dark and fearsome keyboard filling. Unless they're too n3cr0 and gr1m.

Black metal kiddies are almost always good for a laugh, though.
