Do a lot of "civilian" girls in Asia get this kind of surgery? How common is it outside of the celeb world?

There are clinics in certain places in Seoul, South Korea, that are well known for cosmetic surgery particularly in Apkujeongdong and Cheongdamdong. The women are most likely to have had cosmetic surgery particularly if they're incredibly beautiful. Also, when you mentioned they tend to look the same after surgery, the women that go to these clinics may very well have had the same cosmetic surgeons.

Chilly, you don't have to be a celebrity to have this done. There are many everyday Asians of various ethnicities who undergo the double eyelid surgery. I can only speak of what I know. I have had some friends who've had it done, but most of my Asian friends have not. I frequent several Asian sites and there are countless thread discussions regarding double eyelid surgery. There are questions such as: Who did your eyes? Where did you go to have it done? Which surgery method is less invasive? How long is the recovery period? Will I be able to wear make-up right away? Those kind of questions.

A Korean friend told me it's not unusual for Korean girls, in their early teen years, to get the double eyelid procedure with their parents' blessing. Some parents have this done to their children even as babies. There's an inside joke my friend told me. If a Korean woman is strikingly beautiful, search for her childhood pictures to know what she used to look like.

I remember an article a few years back of an Asian man who divorced and sued his former wife because she had cosmetic surgery before they were together. When the wife gave birth to a daughter, the man was upset when he saw his daughter's less-than-beautiful appearance. He thought his wife had an affair. She admitted to having cosmetic surgery and showed before pics of herself. Subsequently, the marriage ended in divorce and the man sued his ex-wife for fraud...that she wasn't who he thought she was...and that was, a natural-born beauty. I just have to say, though, that Asian celebs are similar to their Hollywood counterparts. It's all about competition and how fierce it can be...and looks are very important.

(My apologies for the long post)

Thanks for the long answer, Heartleigh! I find it very interesting.

Each ethincity has something they would like to change about themselves, I guess. For white people, it's the lips, for instance.

And then there are some features that all ethinicities want, like bigger eyes.

That being said, plastic surgery should not be performed on babies, ever! That's so wrong, it's funny.

I'm asking, because I have this beautiful Japanese friend and her eyes look just like the "after"-shots. So I was just wondering if she got it done, too.

The double eyelid surgery is a very popular procedure among Asians in Asian and the US. However, please note that about 50% or so of the Asian population were born with the crease over their eyelids. Also, the crease differs in shape and size from that of, say, Caucasians. What I'm trying to say is, it's certainly feasible your Japanese friend may have been born with the crease and she's had no surgery whatsoever.

It's not really important to me anyway. I'm just fascinated with plastic surgery. She's sooo pretty, it's unreal. Made me curious... Again, thanks for clarifying.
