The wife of former Scotland footballer Colin Hendry has died after an operation to repair damage from the botched liposuction that nearly killed her seven years ago.

Denise Hendry, 43, contracted an infection following the corrective operation and had been on a life support machine for several weeks.

She was scarred for life and needed more than 20 operations after 'routine' liposuction at a private clinic in 2002 left her in a coma.

The latest, in May, ought to have been the last, but tragically she was left desperately ill once again.

Her husband, 43, a title-winning central defender with Blackburn Rovers and Glasgow Rangers who captained Scotland in the 1998 World Cup, was left to take the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support after doctors said she had no chance of recovery.

It emerged yesterday that she had died after a bedside vigil by their four children - Rheagan, 19, Kyle, 18, Calum, ten, and Niamh, nine.

Last night Rheagan paid a poignant tribute to her mother, saying: 'It has always been a great shame that my youngest brother and sister don't remember mum from before her illness. She was not some sort of TV footballer's wife. She was all for the family.'

Mrs Hendry originally decided to have plastic surgery because she wanted to wear a bikini after Niamh's birth.
She booked a 2,400 minor liposuction operation at the private 17-bed Broughton Park Hospital, near Preston, Lancashire, in April 2002.

However Swedish cosmetic surgeon Dr Gustav Aniansson perforated her small intestine and colon nine times, and Mrs Hendry suffered blood poisoning, kidney failure, a heart attack and a collapsed lung.

She was in intensive care for six weeks and Mr Hendry was asked to consider switching off her life support machine but the family refused to give up hope and eventually she regained consciousness.

Dr Aniansson was reported to the General Medical Council and branded 'reckless and incompetent', but he removed himself from the UK medical register.

In 2006, Mrs Hendry, who lived in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, was awarded 300,000 in compensation - the largest cosmetic surgery payout in history.

She still had an open wound on her stomach and suffered regular health problems, and in May she underwent a 16-hour operation at Salford Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester. However she developed an infection which put her back in a coma.

The family are now thought to be considering legal action against Salford hospital.

Last night Mr Hendry said: 'Words cannot describe the desolation we feel. Denise was the shining light in our lives and today that light has gone out.

'I cannot begin to imagine life without her, but we are a strong and devoted family and somehow, if only for Denise's sake, we will get through.'

This is something that makes me angry. To risk your life by having plastic surgery when you have young children is so wrong. I feel very sorry for those children and her husband.
