I have been feeding my dogs a combination of (mostly) raw meat ( such as lamb, beef, buffalo and chicken), rice and vegetables for awhile now with good results. I got my friend to feed her maltese a similar diet and all was going well for awhile until the dog came down with a severe case of pancreatitis. The vet is attributing the condition to the fat in the meat. The poor dog is now on a severe, calorie restricted, low fat diet to prevent flare ups.
I strongly believe in natural food for dogs - as stated previously, vets know little to nothing about animal nutrition and are swayed by the processed pet food manufacturers - but it's important to educate yourself to make the best possible food choices for your dog.
