So the Marine Mammal Center finally updated their website. Akbar turned out to be a female with malnutrition and acute domoic acid toxicity.

Domoic acid comes from algae, which fish eat without any harm. But when humans and sea mammals eat the fish, the acid is toxic. Wiki says "In mammals, including humans, domoic acid acts as a neurotoxin, causing short-term memory loss, brain damage and, in severe cases, death." So I don't know if she's dead, or if they update their page to say if the patient has died or not.

^^^ I bet they wouldn't update if she had died, so hopefully she is recovering. But you might send them an email and ask, or maybe give them a call? They should be happy to hear from someone who cares.

Good idea, Constance. I sent them an email this morning:

RE: June 16 patient: the sea lion Akbar

    Hi,

I would like to know the status of a California Sea Lion rescued from Capitola Beaches on June 16. Her name is Akbar.
Although I was not the one to call in the Marine Mammal Center (someone had done so previously), I did sit with her for an hour and waited until help arrived. You have updated your website recently, and Akbar is currently listed as having "malnutrition domoic acid toxicity (acute)", but this information is over a week old.

I was wondering if you could let me know how she is doing, and if she is still alive. If she is still alive, is it possible to visit her? Would it be possible to take some pictures?

Thank you in advance for any response,

    (Doctora Pepper )
Website says the email's only checked weekly.

Awesome job! I just came back from the Gulf of Mexico and there were so many animals to be saved....but that one pelican knew there was so much love around, it made my trip worth while. Keep going!

They emailed me back. Akbar had a seizure a few days ago, but has recovered and is eating well. Unfortunately she is at a facility that is about 2 hours from me, so I don't think I will be able to visit her. If anyone lives in SF, though, you can visit.
