My cat always goes to the neighbours' as well. He sleeps on their kitchen table, and watches their fish tanks.

I'd seriously be pissed off if somone else's cats came into my house. If I left my windows/doors open, then I made a choice not to have animals, and I don't want other people's either. It's not the cats fault- it doesn't know better, but it seems like just letting your kids out to roam the neighborhood and walk into any house they want.

It's pretty hard to stop a cat from doing what it wants. There's even a law, the King James law, I believe, that gives cats the right to roam freely.
If you don't want animals in your house, squirt them with water or something. They'll soon get the message.

^^ Interesting.. Well here that law doesn't apply. If there is a cat running around loose - than the pound can come pick it up.

What do you have against cats? You don't seem very friendy toward them. And FYI, most pounds kill animals after a few days, and that cat you so loathe could be someone's pet. I don't understand the hostility.

I don't have anything against cats. I have 3 beautiful cats that I rescued from the pound and I take objection to you saying that I'd want them killed off at the pound. First off all - I wasn't the idiot that let their cat run wild to be picked up. Second, get that animal spayed or neutered - even if you aren't going to let it run wild. I'm so sick of irresponsible owners. I am all to familiar with how many animals are put down because there isn't room in the shelter. PS - did you know that if they all get kennel cough - they all go down as well? Did you also know that their are people who come in and expect that little Fluffy would be there after they were called a month ago?
What I have a problem with is irresponsible owners who let their animals out and don't keep track of them. And also those owners who assume that I want their damn cat in my house. Why don't I drop off a few rotties and dobs at your house and say 'well, you left the window/door open?' because I don't see the difference between letting dogs or cats run loose. How do you know the neighbor isn't allegeric to the animal?
Just like people with children - you assume that we think your 'precious' is 'precious'. Here's some news - I have 3 of my own that I take care of, and I don't want your stinky cats over to mooch off the food, or sit on my dining table. My own cats don't even do that.
Either way - maybe I should no longer get upset over a dead cat in the road because their owner was a moron who thought it was ok to let their cat outside.

I've been a responsible pet owner most of my life. My last two cats died at 21 and 23 respectively, so I think I know how to care for an animal. I have two cats now, one a rescued stray, another a cat I bought from a breeder, something I won't do again for various reasons.
Your initial posts seemed quite hostile to cats -- I'm sorry if I misinterpreted them, but your writing style is very harsh, and I can't hear your tone of voice or see your face.
I don't have an issue with letting cats outside -- cats WANT to be outside for the most part, and I am aware of the risks. Keeping a cat inside its entire life seems cruel to me, and yes, I know all the valid points you are going to make before you make them. But I have been letting cats out -- responsibly -- for a long time without incident.
I don't think it's fair to punish the cats because they have irresponsible owners, which you seem to think is OK, at least from what you've written. I'm lucky enough to live in an area with a no-kill shelter. I don't think any animal should be killed, especially ones who get kennel cough from being kept in poor conditions, however, being dead might be a better alternative to being caged the rest of their lives. I haven't quite made up my mind on that one.
And yes, I am familiar with the pitiful excuses and shabby behavior people exhibit toward these vulnerable creatures. It takes a lot to shock me, unfortunately.

Jeez, Icequeen, I'm glad you rescued 3 cats from the pound, but I'm afraid PB is right, your writing style is rather abrasive. It also seems kind of harsh to penalize an innocent cat for having a moronic or neglectful owner, which you seem to want to do.
I live in an apartment complex, and we have a regular cat community here, because some irresponsible tenants leave their cats here when they move out. And of course they multiply. But we're not calling the pound on them, because they are harmless and bother nobody. I know some people feed them, and I know one great lady who even catches as many as she can and takes them to the vet to be spayed.
I do agree with you that in most cases it is not a good idea to let a cat out. There are just too many dangers out there. My cats "out" is a screened porch, and that is as close to the Great Outdoors as those little rascals are ever going to get.

Thanks for posting this, PB. I agree with everything you said.
