If this was the first time Gana had babies then this might shed light on why she rejected her baby..

The primiparous mother is usually young. In captivity she has had no
opportunity to see mothering, so that immediate rejection of the baby is usual
following the discomfort of birth, or she may not permit adequate breast feeding,
necessitating separation in a few days..... The rate of maternal rejection and ‘baby battering’ is very high in primiparous
    gorillas
*primiparous: having given birth for the first time

Maybe she just wasn't well-prepared to care for both babies and chose one over the other. Who knows? Sucks that she had two and now has none...

Now this is the kind of feel good story I need to start my day.

Like maybe they have some birth defect that is unseen and they'll eventually just die?

It is very interesting to see the attachment that this "animal" has to its young.

I swear, I can hardly read these animal threads anymore unless they are titled "Cute kitten nursed by polar bear" or something else like that. This is soooo heavy and sad.

Very tragic, poor mommy and baby.
