We went and got Spooky last night!

It's a 1/2 hour drive home from my aunt's, and we didn't even have to use a carrier. Spooky went back and forth from my lap and my husband's lap, purring, looking at the scenery, happy as could be.

Here at home he's been trying to get used to things, I suppose. He's being a bit shy about it all now that we are here. My husband thinks he'd older than a year...I wonder if the vet will be able to give me a good guess on age. But my husband thinks he's older because he's not being super-playful; he's subdued and a little slow-moving.

He sure is a handsome cat! And even if he's not running around all excited, he seems to be happy, content!!! Now I just need to get into the vet for a checkup!

Thanks for convincing me to get him, guys!

I have one too but mine takes monster poops that it jams often and usually at 5 am.

Cats don't really like hooded litterboxes -- they're really for owners, as much as anyone can own a cat. A cat's instinct is to be highly vulnerable when it's defecating etc. and not being able to see around them goes against it. Plus, they hold in the smell.

Corn litter works great and the smell is minimal, especially if you scoop quickly after the "act." It also doesn't have the harmful chemicals that cause bladder cancer and other problems in cats that most regular clumpable litter does.

Glad you got the kitty, Algernon!

So funny you wrote that, because each time in my previous posts that I said something about 'owning' a cat or being a 'cat owner', I realized it sounded off! Cats refuse to be owned, that's for sure. Spooky's just our new roommate.

And I'm glad you said something about the hooded box. Where do you find corn litter, BTW?

You're right about cats not liking hooded litterboxes. My first cat was completely feral, & somebody caught him for me when he was about 8 weeks old. He was like a tasmanian devil. I had to wear garden gloves to hold him. However, he went straight for my temporary disposable litterbox. Weird how cats do that. No training at all.

Then I bought a hooded one. He started peeing all over the house & we couldn't understand why. Seems like DUH now, but we were baffled. When I finally bought a clue & took the hood off, he went right back to it.

I didn't know about the instinct, etc. Interesting.

I have two girls...and if either litter box is not to their likeing they will go in front of them!

On the same note my big girl has an allergy to any type of poultry. I am now considering an all natural diet for both of them because almost all cat food has a chicken by product in it...Any ideas?

Eh, I'm bigger and stronger. So you best believe I own Henry! And whenever I do have kids, yep, I'll own them, too!

Yay for Spooky! I hope you are all very happy together. It is true about the hooded litter box, I took ours off partly because my big guy just fits better in the box without the lid, also because the lid was being used by some of the cats as a way to attach other cats. They would sit on the lid and swat at the cat doing its business in the box. Very rude.

Congrats Algernon! You'll love your black kitty. I had one for 14 years before she passed away from kidney disease.

A word of warning about garages...my sister's cats loved to climb up in the rafters, and sadly, they got caught in the garage door opener and and were killed (this happened on two separate occassions.)

Please keep your kitty inside -- some people have an irrational fear of black cats and will run them down on sight.

I have four kitties -- 2 strays that adopted us, one we got as a kitten and another we adopted from the shelter. I loved all your stories about how the cats chose you -- it is so true. When we went to the shelter, there were hundreds of cats -- it was overwhelming. A volunteer came to me with this cat that was just brought in that morning. She was shaking like a leaf. She handed her to me and the cat just melted in my arms. That was it -- she was ours.

Our two strays both took up residence under our deck. The first time it happened, I went by the book, called the county health department and the local police department. The cat was confiscated, passed from agency to agency and I had to follow him through the whole thing to finally adopt him. It was traumatizing for the poor cat! I didn't know that they had to confiscate all strays -- I was just checking to find out if there were any lost cat reports. The next time it happened, I did a private search for the owners and when that turned up nothing, we kept her.

    We love our kitties!

We keep the litter box in the downstairs bathroom. The cats are super-picky and if one has used it, the rest will shit on the floor...but the floor is linoleum and once the shit is dry, it's easy enough to pick up and flush down the toilet.

Don't get a cat unless you're prepared to let them come and go as they please...or pick their shit up every single day.
