This is our new "rescue chihuahua", with the little boy who begged for him. Given up at least twice before we got him. He has been a dream. Very quiet, very loving, and very well behaved. On his way to being housebroken (thanks to Mrs. Mohandas). And asleep on my lap as I type this.

From talking with my wife and what she heard from the animal shelter -- the first owner bought him from a store for about $1,200. I think they owned an apartment. Supposedly, he barked non-stop, and they gave him up after 4 days. The second owner owned an Akita (I thought it was a Chow, although, I don't know the difference anyway). Apparently, the Akita was aggressive toward this dog and the owner was worried that something really bad would happen and gave it up.

After the kids had visited with it, my wife asked if there were any people on the list waiting to adopt. The person said there were two families already. She signed up because of how well the dog got along with our kids and how much they liked him. The other two families dropped off, and we got him.

Mohandas - are you crate training? That's always worked like a charm for me, not only for house breaking but also for bark training. Dogs get the concept very quickly and I've never had to use the crate longer than a month. It works as a medium for teaching dogs the difference, behaviorally, between in door/shared space and outside space very well.

Oh your little guy is so happy to have found his pack. Just look at him! What a sweetie.

Very soon you will be wondering how you ever lived without a dog. Once they are attached, they are PSYCHIC, I tell ya.

Yup, we're crate training. I've never owned a dog before, but my wife had at least two as a child. Crates were pretty much unheard of then, but the Animal Shelter person made it a point to say that the dog would need a crate. The first night, I think he barked for about 45 minutes (I timed it). Then, the second night it was like 5 minutes. Now, when we put him in the crate, we barely hear a peep out of him.

I think the big thing now will be to house break him. Mrs. Mohandas has a timer going off every 2.5 hours to take him out to pee. And as soon as he is finished eating, she takes him out to go number 2, which he does. I'm just hoping that he can hold his water for longer than 2.5 hours eventually. But we've heard that chihuahua's have kind of tiny bladders - like the rest of their body.
